Default 9 month stockpile/pantry

I don't have a stockpile but I want to start one. I'm living in the midst of a "when the **** hits the fan" (Greek economic crisis) scenario already and I feel see it getting worse.

The thing is, we are moving in a few days and living someplace temporary for a few months. I won't be able to start my stockpile until September. Then, in June 2011, we have to move again. We can't afford to move using a moving van, so it's just our small economy-size car.

Therefore, my plan is to make a stockpile-pantry that will provide our essentials starting in September but actually use it as an "eat until it's all gone" pantry so that at the end of June 2011, when we move, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is gone, but just barely.

I know this is not what those of you who stockpile do and I know it's a weird situation (my whole life is a series of weird situations. I have officially changed address 15 times in the last 4 years.) But I think it's the right way to go because of the combination of the Greek economic crisis and our 9-month living situation.

A few things I MUST keep in mind:

1) We cannot afford anything bigger than a 1-room studio apartment. That means that I will not have a room or closet that I can devote to storage. It will have to be piled in our room someplace.

2) In the winter (October through April), we are subject to EXTREME humidity. This past winter, we had to constantly clean mold off our shoes. Water dripped down our INTERIOR walls. We can't afford expensive vacuum sealed jars and such. So the kinds of foods and items I can store safely is limited.

3) Many of our stockpile items I am going to try to get all at once, before we come to the island. I will load them into the car with all of our stuff (when we are moving back) to save on ferry tickets, and our car is really small, so that actually severely limits how much I can bring. I will save a lot of money buying things in bulk in Athens so I do want to do this. The plan is to shop near the port, fill the passenger seat of the car with the stuff, and have me walk to the boat. So whatever will fit in the passenger seat of the car is Part 1, and then Part 2 is what I have to buy on the island when we arrive (the selection is much better in Sept at the tail-end of tourist season than in the winter, so I plan to buy everything immediately on arrival).

4) I have budgeted €500 for food items and €180 for other items for this stockpile.

5) Even under the best of circumstances, we lose electricity pretty regularly.

6) This year, we didn't have a freezer AT ALL (just a mini-fridge with no freezer). Next year, we might have one, and we might not. I have no idea.

Here's my first draft LIST:

glass cleaning spray – 1 pc - already have this
bathroom cleaning spray – 1 pc
mop heads – 3 pcs
Swiffer cloths – 1 box

Okay so obviously not all of that will fit in the passenger seat of a small car ROFL!! But it's the start of my list and it gives me a good idea of what I think we will need/use.

I don't even know if it counts as a stockpile if I already plan to use it all up in 9 months. But the idea is that after the initial investment, we should be able to get by on around €20/week for consumable items. Since we're already living in a disaster-ish situation, might as well act like it.

Any input gratefully received

Red face Save even more money

I have been reading your other thread and I have really enjoyed it. It is very interesting to take a peek into your life. Thank you for sharing!

I do see a couple things right off the bat that can save you money.I know from your other thread you are in dire need of doing so.

-Why do you need a his and hers shaving cream? Share

-Get two razors of the same brand, men or womens and then share the refill package instead of having refills and disposables.

-Tampons? Have you ever tried a Diva cup? Awesome ,and it will save you money.

-Don't use paper products! Get some rags, micro fiber clothes and cloth napkins.

-Make your own cleaning products and laundry detergent. Very cheap to do.

-Use a micro fiber cloth on your swiffer

-wet wipes, why? Use a wet cloth for whatever.

This was just what caught my eye right away. I am sure others will see more ways to help you.

Take care and keep writing about your Greek life journey!

TTBF - Hi and thanks for your post! These are all great ideas, thank you for posting.

I need to go through the list again. We've actually now moved to Athens for the summer. Yesterday, I went to my friend's house where I've been storing TONS of my stuff that I had noplace else for, and we moved it all to my husband's parents' basement. In the process, I saw what I had, and it turns out I have some things that I didn't realize I already had!! So I need to update with that.

I have a meeting now so I have to go but I will take another look at this tonight or tomorrow, and also post on my other thread post-moving! And maybe take some photos of our new ENORMOUS and totally empty apartment (it's 4 bedrooms). It's just ours for 6 weeks while I'm here working. It feels so weird to have SPACE.

I'd buy something that will help with the humidity. (Like Bison moisture absorber + refill).

Do you use sunscreen / daycream / bodylotion? I did not see that on your list.
Do you have a first aid kit? Paracetamol (drugstore brand), some desinfectant, band-aid ( 1 meter at least)
I would also buy detergent to wash your clothes.

I don't see bleach mentioned. You can use bleach and water for the kitchen and bathroom cleaners. Also, what are "bar wipes"??
The bleach will also help with the mold and mildew problems. Why two different mouthwashes? If you wanna save space then you need to pick and choose on these things.
As for glass cleaning, all you need is a microfiber cloth and plain water. You can also use them for dusting and general cleaning.
Buying borax, washingsoda and some laundry bar soap will save you money because use can make so many other cleaners with those ingredients. Get your momma to send them to ya if you don't find their equivalents there.

Thanks for the suggestions - I made a few substitutions and changes. I'm definitely not going to replace things I already have (noted in green) by purchasing new things. The ones that I say I already have, I have enough for the entire 9 month period, so I'm going to use them, rather than spend more money on something new. A few things I didn't realize I had, I found when I picked up four large cartons of my stuff from a friend's house, so that's updated. However, the ideas for ways to substitute with cheaper things (even if I already have them) will be useful in the future once the stuff I have runs out.

I don't see bleach mentioned. You can use bleach and water for the kitchen and bathroom cleaners.

I don't really use bleach, however I will check it out for a cheap cleaning solution. My mother was always sort of afraid of it so I never got into using it.

Also, what are "bar wipes"??

They have lots of names, they are spongy cloths that you can use to clean all sorts of things, sort of like a paper towel you can use forever. I love them, I like to have one or two on hand, and they are only about 10 cents.

Why two different mouthwashes? If you wanna save space then you need to pick and choose on these things.

My husband uses the more expensive one (Periogard) because he has gum problems. I use the cheapest one I can find (whatever Listerine is on sale) and while I guess it would take more space, it saves money if only one of us is using the expensive one. I actually stopped using Listerine when I ran out of the last bottle and I'm weighing whether to start using it again or not. €5 for a bottle of mouthwash seems ridiculous. My husband's is €6 for a smaller bottle, but whenever I criticize it he reminds me that health is important - I did convince him to cut down on the amount he uses each time. If I do buy Listerine I will also use a small amount each time.

As for glass cleaning, all you need is a microfiber cloth and plain water.

I don't know where to get a microfiber cloth but when I grew up my mother always had me wash windows using old newpapers since they were the only thing we had that didn't leave streaks, so I always just use old newspapers or ad circulars that are free anyway.

Buying borax, washingsoda and some laundry bar soap will save you money because use can make so many other cleaners with those ingredients.

I don't tend to go through cleaning products as quickly as most people. I think it's because people tend to overestimate the living space we have. We live in one room. Even if I cleaned it every day (I don't), I'd never use up a whole bottle of cleaning solution. My husband bought a bottle of cleaning spray last year and I expect it to last a few more years. I adjusted the list to reflect that. Someday if I ever have somewhere to live where I need to worry about this I will look into these ideas; for now I'm going to keep using what I already have and not buy anything new.

Here in Athens I bought/brought NO cleaning supplies whatsoever because there is someone who comes and cleans the apartment every few days, and has a HUGE stash of cleaning supplies in a closet in the apartment, so there's no reason to buy any! (Obviously this apartment, and the cleaning service, are perks of the job and are neither coming out of my salary nor something I would elect to purchase on my own!)

I'd buy something that will help with the humidity. (Like Bison moisture absorber + refill).

I don't know what that is; I'll check it out. I would like to have less humidity to contend with.

Do you use sunscreen / daycream / bodylotion? I did not see that on your list.

I added sunscreen (I use it) but I have a ton of it so won't be buying for a long time. I don't use daycream or body lotion; I actually have some already that I almost never use and will probably last me 10 years at the rate I use them.

Do you have a first aid kit? Paracetamol (drugstore brand), some desinfectant, band-aid ( 1 meter at least)

I have an ENORMOUS medical kit with over 50 medicines (prescription and OTC) and equipment. I grew up with doctors so I can't help it. It's all up to date and already here so no need to purchase. I also have a weekly budget for medicines.

I would also buy detergent to wash your clothes.

We didn't have to buy detergent last year because it was included in our rent with the washing machine. If that's not the case next year, I'll add that to the list; otherwise, no need!

LadyKemma - great suggestions. I use alcohol based soap for when I can't get to a bathroom with running water (happens fairly often out here) and I need to wash my hands. I also carry dry soap leaves in my purse for when I have access to running water but no soap (even more common). I don't use bar soap on my face because my skin is very sensitive but I barely ever use facewash either; I've been trying to use up one bottle for at least 3 years and I think it will last another year so I probably won't buy any. I marked that as "already have." I'm not going to use a Diva cup until I work my way through the approximately 800 tampons (not exaggerating) that I have. They don't sell the brand I like in Greece so for the past 5 years, every time I came to Greece I brought at least a hundred with me. I can't keep up with them, I have them coming out my ears! I won't buy them for many years I'm sure (my periods are only 2 days anyway). Shaving gel - my husband can't use bar soap - he has very heavy Mediterranean facial hair - but I can for all but bikini line so I took mine off the list.

You can cut this down to four:

deodorant (His) – 3 pcs
deodorant (Hers) – 3 pcs

if you buy something that's scent free. That's what we did! We use Tom's of Maine. Works fine for both of us.

Good idea on the deodorant! I actually found about 5 old deodorants (running out but not totally gone) that were in various places and put them all together in one place. I figure I can get 6 months out of all of them put together. My husband has a habit of putting it on EVERY time he takes a shower even if it's a shower right before bed. I have told him there's no reason to put deodorant on right before you get in bed, but he still does it.
I'm not going to use a Diva cup until I work my way through the approximately 800 tampons (not exaggerating) that I have. They don't sell the brand I like in Greece so for the past 5 years, every time I came to Greece I brought at least a hundred with me. I can't keep up with them, I have them coming out my ears! I won't buy them for many years I'm sure (my periods are only 2 days anyway).
Good thing they've got a string so you can pull them out quite easily

The Bison thing is a plastic jar with moisture absorbing grain-like- things (think Pampers, but then without the diaper) They're often used in caravans, cellars etc. You should be able to find them at a DIY store.

Great mental image hahaha!!

I will look for that!

A humidity anecdote... my husband is a pianist and he was so heartbroken watching the beautiful piano on the island melting in the humidity, I came to Athens one time and I asked him if he wanted me to bring anything from the city to the island - the only thing he wanted was a piano dehumidifier. So I went to a piano store and found out a real piano dehumidifier costs hundreds of euros so they gave me (for free) some of those moisture absorbing "pillows" (the kind they put in shoeboxes but about 20x bigger). They said to just lay them out to dry in the sun periodically and you can use them forever. I think they were silica. Anyway, I wondered then and I still wonder now if we could get a bunch of those and lay them out around the house.

K, I'm lost....this isn't the stockpile? Wow!
Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.
