Default Sugar prices thru the roof

My friend just told me she bought a 4 lb. bag of sugar at Wal Mart yesterday... $3.38 for a 4 pound bag (not a 5 lb. bag).

If I'm not mistaken, aren't the 3 to 4 weeks leading up to Thanksgiving the best time to stockpile baking supplies? I know the sales just before Thanksgiving are better that the week before Xmas is. I just can't remember if it normally includes sugar or just flour, meal, etc.

Usually the baking supplies, etc. are cheapest starting mid October, or at least that's true around here. Also the prices stay low usually until just after Chrismas! Coupons, etc. should be out for these staples as well.

Around here until mid-October the push is for back to school and Halloween, so school supplies, pumpkins, candy are cheap.

Sugar comes in a 4# and flour in a 5#. Wait another week and things should be good. I got a coupon for sugar filed recently-Domino I think?

Actually, I was just thinking how much sugar has gone ~down~. It was hovering around $3.39 for a $5 bag ($.58 lb) for at least a year, but5 last week at Winn Dixie, I paid $1.50 for a 4lb. bag ($.36lb) I bought 4, and now wish I would've bought 10. We go thru a gallon of iced tea a day around here.

And as far as spices and herbs go... ever since I learned to shop the ethnic aisle for them at the supermarket, I save a small fortune. Look for the BADIA brand, and compare the prices to McCormick's. You'll be pleasantly surprised . And believe me, I'm not one to sacrifice taste or flavor when it comes to making my family's faves that I need certain herbs and spices for.

There was a drought in Brazil, predictions are been made this will be the first time in 11 years there will be a shortage there . Brazil also made a global warming pact that their cars must run on so much ethanol which is made by their sugar.

Raw-sugar futures gained in New York on speculation that Russia, the world’s third-biggest importer, will boost purchases as the worst drought in at least half a century threatens production.

Drought and record heat in central Russia and along the Volga River forced the government to declare emergencies in 28 farm regions. Sugar beets were among crops being damaged.
They are saying this might be a 29 year high.( source: Bloomberg)

FDA predicting a 7 percent rise in price.
Yes I watch the Futures and Stock market to know when to buy food and stocks etc....lol

In 2009 it was 12.00 for futures now it is 23.96.

If you find a good deal on sugar stock up now it won't be going down for awhile. By the way most large stores are taking the loss and hit on some products and not raising the prices near what they should be yet. Be warned of this , as when the prices start raising they will go much high.

The commodities set to rise are as follows:

    Sugar

    Cocoa

    Wheat ( Flour products etc)

    etc

ETA : I am a mod at a coupon board and yes every year baking supplies go on sale mid Oct - thanksgiving but this year if you find buys before then I would buy given the above as these should only continue to rise.

    Blessings all,

Our groc. prices seem to be higher here. Our sugar has been that high or more........for awhile.

Last year our stores waited until the last minute to have the TG sales and they weren't very good. They had them on the week of Thanksgiving and then they weren't very good. Not good enough for me to fight the crowds on that last week. We had a few better sales in Dec. but they were mighty slim. Turkey went to a good price.......and ham.........but nothing else was great.

Heard coffee was going to skyrocket too.......have been trying to buy some extra of that.

What has skyrocketed here is butter! A pound has been running around $2.59!! the cheapest I have seen it IN AGES is $1.99. It was around 1.50 last year. (the good sales put it at 99 cents but there was a limit) I keep thinking that closer to the holidays it will drop.........I hope!

A store a few miles further from home than I normally travel, had a really good sale this weekend. 4 lb. sugar $1.50 each, no limit. I bought 10. Ronco Pasta figured to .66 lb, got several. Potatoes 10 lb. $2; 26 oz. pasta sauce .69 ea; doz. eggs 2/$1; peanut butter 12 oz. .69 ea.; can corn 3/$1.
Big lots had the 7 oz. resealable bag of Clabber Girl baking cocoa for $1.70 (Hershey's 8 oz. is appx $3 +/-) and I had a 20% off coupon on everything I bougt, so it was $1.36 each, bought several.

Hopefully, this will be enough sugar to last thru TG & Xmas & then some.
