I really liked this calculator. I've printed out a report of my family's needs for six months, but you can choose any length of time. It has six groups - grains, legumes, fats and oil, milk, sugars and misc. It gives you a good idea of how much of these items you need for your chosen length of time. It's well worth a look.

I have a question: since I don't make my own bread, what else is all this wheat used for? The calculator estimated that I need 30 lbs of wheat, but I wouldn't know what to do with it. Can anyone recommend a good substitute for it?

Star, the calculator is meant as a guide only. If you don't make your own bread and if you don't have a grinder, don't buy wheat.
I don't buy wheat at all, I buy rye and wholegrain flours and make my bread from those. I don't buy cornmeal either, but I buy a lot more pearl barley than they suggest.
When you're stockpiling it's very important to only buy and store what you know you'll use. You're the best judge of what your family eats, just use the calculator as a starting guide.
Thanks I printed a 1-month report & so far I'm ahead w/the rice that's about all ....I didn't check the rest of the report. I bought a 20 LB bag of PATHMARK rice it was on sale for $4.99 a few weeks ago.
I love rice but DH is a very picky eater...I eat all types & usually when ordering Chinese take-out food I get the brown rice.
DH saw the bag of rice & wants to know who we're feeding? w/all that rice I plan on packing it into smaller Lock N Lock containers. So once I open the bag I better have enough containers to store it all
Thanks for reminding me of this site. And the idea to use it for a monthly basis. I printed out a monthly usage too and plan to compare it to what's in my pantry right now. I think I'm actually doing okay.
