Default little old lady leaves town $4.5 million

"Oller, who cut her own hair, bought only thrift store clothes and refused to purchase even shoelaces, parlayed her tightness with a dollar into an act of generosity that the country is quickly learning about."

Verna Oller, little old lady and secret stock picker, leaves small town $4.5 million

It was very thoughtful of her to do this, and I'm sure children will enjoy her generosity for years to come. But her refusal to buy shoelaces is a bit over the top. I see being frugal as a good thing, but being so cheap that you won't buy shoelaces is taking it a little too far in my opinion. I don't think the children would have minded if she'd spent a little on herself...her act would have still been extremely generous if she'd left $3.5 million and enjoyed the rest of it while she was here.

Thanks for sharing that story. So many times the "real" news gets lost and we never see it.
She sure seemed fiesty and I am so glad that her wishes are being fulfilled. Her gift of the swimming pool will enable many kids to make wonderful summertime memories that they will share and enjoy for years and years.

Love it when things like that happen.

    Thanks for sharing.

A few months back we had someone leave the dog shelter over a million......it was neat. Think she even stated that it couldn't be used for wages too.......loved it!
