Assistance-Free!
As of November 1st, I have been officially clear of any type of government assistance! Foodstamps and small cash benefit for my son and I, plus our medical cards have been replaced with a full time job with excellent benefits!
It feels so good to be back on my own, especially after putting up with the constant stigma and snide remarks from various places.
When I first found out I was pregnant, I was shocked, but I thought I was prepared. I was working and had a good amount of savings stored up. Then, I miscarried my son's twin and due to complications, was put on bed rest. Since I hadn't worked for my employer for over a year, I couldn't get any paid time off, and decided it was best to just quit my job and live with family.
Because I had so many medical problems, and had to see several specialists, I had to go on a medical card. The baby was born almost two months early, with complications, so he had to be on a medical card, and since I couldn't work because of taking care of him, and some damage I had from the labor, I exhausted my savings. Concerned with my son's best interest, I did apply for foodstamps and government assistance. I was unable to breastfeed, and his special prescription formula cost $26 a can.
When my son turned a year old, I found a job working at Border's...the pay was awful, and the hours were worse. Luckily, throughout this process, I kept submitting applications and sending out resumes...and ended up with the perfect job for me!
And...thanks to FV, I have the tools and the motivation to stay on top! Even though my government check was less than $300 for the two of us, I still managed to shop wisely, use coupons and sales, and cut out all extras to end up with a great food stock, over a year's worth of HBA, AND a small savings account.
So, just wanted to take a minute and say thank you FV'ers, and let everyone know it IS possible to have things turn around. My son is now 14 months old, healthy and happy, and we're making it on our own. We have no debt, but still, anything can happen, and I encourage everyone to be prepared, but stay positive!

That is so fantastic WTG. Sometimes things happen in life and you do what you have to do. I had to be on medical card and FS when i was pregnant with my son. It was a complicated preganacy and he was born 2 months early with medical problems. I thank God that i had the help.

people or things.
