Mom's windfall
I thought this was pretty cool.
As some of you know, I have been sending my mother a couple of hundred dollars every month to help her out. She was doing okay, but is in her 80's and has been having fears about whether her money will last as long as she does. Then she got hit with a few extra recurring expenses (cost of HOA, insurance (health and auto), and property taxes went up), and she was really getting depressed. So I started to send her $100 every two weeks, and my sister started to send her money every month, as well, just to give Mom some breathing room.
Well, my mother got a letter last week from a company for which my father worked most of his life. This letter said that my mother might be eligible for a pension based on my father's employment.
Long story short, she will be getting $150/month starting June, and it will continue until her death. ALSO, she SHOULD have been getting this amount since 2000, so she is getting a retroactive lump sum payment to cover all the missing payments!!! (My sister believes it will be around $18,000.) Mom is so excited, she is acting like a little kid. Of course, being the frugal person she has always been, she says she is going to put $10,000 aside so that my sister and I can pay for all her funeral expenses and any outstanding bills when she dies!
But she is also talking about going on a clothes shopping spree at our local outlet mall when the money comes in.
I haven't heard Mom be so excited EVER. I think she feels rich, probably for the first time in her life. Very cool.

Very good of this company to recognize the mistake and make it right!
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"
