Questions about Mystery Shopping...

Hi, I'm interested in trying some mystery shopping. I signed up with one company (Secret Shopnet), and applied to another (Bestmark). But there seem to be a milliion companies out there. Are there any that any of you can recommend? How do I know which ones are good? I did read the other thread about mystery shopping and saw that you should never sign up with any that require YOU to pay THEM to start (that makes sense), and I believe someone said that you should never give your social security number. However, I saw on at least two company's applications that they require the SSN for tax purposes (another said that taxes would be the responsiblity of the shopper.

I know that different companies may work within different regions of the country (or even internationally), so it may be difficult to get recommendations for companies that would work for me (I'm in Mass.), but I would love to hear about any companies that have worked out well for others.

You do have to give your social security number to most of them and they are allowed to ask for them. You will official be working for them as an independant contractor so if you make over $600 with them in one year they report it to the IRS and send you a 1099 form. This is why they ask for a SS#.
