    Default Walnuts

Has anyone ever sold walnuts or pecans for you southerners? I pick up walnuts a good portion of the day. I dont think it pays a lot, .13 per pound. Anyway, I figure they're just laying there rotting, so I might as well make some cash off them. The only bad thing is my back is kind of sore from picking them up all day.

Way back when, a long time ago, me and my dad used to pick them up ( like the first five years I was married) and I'd make extra $'s for christmas that way. VERY backbreaking work it is, but I'd do it again probably if I had pecan trees. The one's we used to pick up were from my sisters trees. I think the hurricane got her pecans this year though.

Isn't there some sort of long-handled scoop you could use?

There is a nut picker that I have seen at craft shows. They are $40 though! My legs are very sore today. I will continue to do this though. lol I actually liked doing it because I told my Dd that I'd slit the $$ with her and it was a chance for us to spend some time togther. That is something she never seems to want to do anymore.

We used to pick up and sell walnuts when I was a kid/teenager. I think the price is about right but you're right about your back and legs. You will be sore. A long soak in a hot tub will help a little bit. I'm glad your daughter is helping as it is a great learning experience of having to work for your money and great to spend the time together.

As teenagers we picked up walnuts and sold them and mowed 2 cemetarys and helped bail and stack hay to make money for the summer fair and for Christmas gifts. Thanks for bringing back those good memories of us all working together.

We used to have chestnut trees in our yard and every year would pick the nuts and sell them. But the price was more like 50 per pound. Of course those nuts come in a hard shell covered in prickly spines so they can hurt!

We have tons and tons of walnuts in our yard, but I never thought about selling them. I wasn't sure if people would actually buy them or not

Samantha, check around. We used to have a company open up yearly just to sell walnut to in Missouri. You pick and back them in gunny sacks or old animal feed bags, haul them to the dealer, he hulls them with a machine and weighs them after hulled and we would get the price after they removed the hull. Great way to make money or you can just take some bags of nuts in to them and they would hull them for you and you wouldn't have to mess with it yourself. Just crack them with a hammer when you get home and you have nice walnut meat without all the yucky hull.

My dad (in Illinois) said that there's a company he's found on the internet?? that pays for walnuts per pound. He had an awesome year with black ones and someone gave him 10 pounds of English.

He said they pay pretty good prices so I should ask him for the info in case you can make better than 13 cents a pound. But then I guess it doesn't really help if you're picking them for someone else, so nevermind.

    they'd make great gifts too!

I had never thought of selling them, but then again, I don't have any trees anywhere here.

Hmm, maybe in the spring I might want to think of buying some fruit and nut trees!
