Can Some One Explain (Canada)
Can someone explain to me the import charges (tarriffs) I think from the US to Canada.
For example a piece of musical equipment valued at $200 USD. Is there a fee to getting it into Canada?
thanks

There is but not sure what it is. Have only sent small items. Maybe this http://ircalc.usps.gov/default.asp?M...ngle&CID=10054 will help. It starts with the weight of item, will probably request value info. etc. and hopefully give final tarif charges

Your best bet is to phone Canadian customs. They will tell you what you have to pay.

I ditto.
I know importing American books from American homeschool supply places I used to simply double the cost, and arrive at the real cost to me in Canadian dollars. Sometimes I had a bit of change left over.
But there is a handling fee of 5$ per package that Customs charges on top of any import fees and taxes, and that is taxed at the GST rate because it's a service (yep, charging you 5$ IS a service, and it's taxable too!)
So do remember the hidden taxes and charges. It's not just Canadian dollar exchange, there are tariffs on some things, taxes on others, sometimes both depending on the item and whether it's covered in free trade, and then on top of that there are charges to get it thru customs.
OH AND I TOTALLY FORGOT-- there is also a 20$ handling fee that UPS lands people with.
That fee is something UPS WON'T tell the shipping company about so their unlucky Canadian shmuck of a customer THINKS they've paid all shipping and handling
till UPS calls and won't release the item without an EXTRA 20$ charge to "handle it across the border". Refuse to pay, and they will ship it right back to the sender as REFUSED!!!!!
I've run into that one more times than I can count so I refuse to use UPS, and rely on the US postal service which doesn't hold goods at ransom, charging extra so you can get your items.

Thanks ladies. I sold something on eBay and stated that I would not ship outside the US and guess what - someone from Canada bought it. It is more than 100 pounds so shipping is high and now there is another $150 in customs fees. I guess if the person is willing to pay the extra she can, if not I will refund her money. I knew there was a reason I said - only US.

just goes to show that no matter where you live if someone wants what you have they will pay no matter what for it.
For example two years ago I sold a table from ikea on ebay to a lady in California..I'm was in Ontario at the time. It was 300.00USD for her to freight it to her home
The table was only 200$ USD too
