Does anyone have a side business
or anything like that you do on the side??
I work F/t but am just getting certified to be a reflexologist. You know...reflex points on the body to clear up problems in the rest of the body. Or just think massage depending on how open you are to these things!
Anyhow -- just looking to connect with other small biz kinda gals.Heather

Well I do web design and website updating on the side, if that counts! It does bring in around $200 extra per month, but I dont work more than 8 hours a month, so $200 is great to me.

I guess you could call it a business on the side...
I teach piano lessons after school and on the weekends. It brings in an extra $300 a month which is definitely needed. My Blog: http://amysreallife.wordpress.com

I tutor, and I have an ebay store. I've done a lot of side jobs over the years, but I'm just doing a couple extra things now.

We sell plumerias on the side our main business is commercial painting of resturants. Last week over a Fri. Sat. and Sunday we made over $1,500.00 at a plant sale. My kinda side business!

Plumerias are the flowers that lei's are made out of in Hawaii. They grow on trees that can get up to 20' tall here in South Florida. They come in many different colors and scents.

Well, when I called the IRS last spring about taxes on some part time work, they declared me a small business -- which I think is pretty funny, but I wasn't about to chortle at the tax guys, so I solemnly conceded the point. I do some editing, which sometimes also involves some light duty translation, for a congregation of nuns here. I don't make much from it because I charge them "brother in law rates" for old times sake (I used to be one of them) and it comes in pretty erratically. But it's a nice supplement when it does. They are in the process of translating all the historical documents of the congregation (from Italian). Pretty dull stuff (plumerias sound ever so much nicer), but whatever pays the bills, right?

Re: the IRS -- well, it's paid by check through the congregation's general fund, and it's an ongoing month after month thing. If anyone started poking around in their accounts, or I lost the IRS lottery and was ever audited, we would both be in a heap of trouble. I hate paying the taxes, but I sleep better. I have known too many people who tangled with the IRS, and I don't EVER want it to be me.
However, I finally told them that I was raising my rate, so in effect, they're ending up paying the taxes -- I still clear what I initially said I would do it for. I was really wanting to quit, and they really didn't want me to, so they agreed to the higher rate. I even told them that since the withholding and self-employment taxes are taken out of my regular job's paycheck, they would have to guarantee at least that amount each month, whether they had work for me or not. They even agreed to that! I patted myself on the back for the negotiation. I am usually not nearly that assertive, but I was tired of having taxes withheld in months where they didn't get their own act together to give me the materials. I just told them I would no longer be in the position of losing money from my monthly cash flow because I was working for them. I can still hardly believe I did that -- or that they accepted the deal!Donna

Excellent job! I like that you value your time and money- even if it's for the nunnery!

I'm a SAHM but am a trained professional doula (labour assistant). I try to book 1-2 clients per month; it's a job I do out of love but the extra bit of money really helps! (Just don't break it down per hour, because for most births it ends up being a really, really low rate.)
I'm considering adding custom prenatal education sessions at about $25/hour, but so far haven't had the extra time to create a course outline or content.
