Selling Large Furniture: Suggestions?
When DH and I married three years ago, we had to combine two households into one. We got rid of a great deal then, but we still have too much furniture and it's time to sell.
The furniture is in our home some of it is at my mom's house, about three miles away. I'm going to place a classified in the local paper. It's all big pieces--dining room table, bedroom suites, etc, so I'm tempted to put it in the Moving Sale category. But, with two locations, I think it will confuse people...plus we're not moving and I don't want to mislead anyone.
The other option is list is in Furniture for Sale category, but it's mostly single items people are selling.
Suggestions or ideas? Has anyone else a lot of furniture at one time? BTW, we're selling the stuff now because we have decided with the housing market so crazy that we will stay in our current home at least five more years. So we are trying to "customize" the house more to our needs. Neither of us likes having excess or clutter, so there is no time like the present.

Place an ad and pictures on craigslist.com
I love that place. It's how I sold my old car.

Whatever you decide on how to list it (which I would do under furniture for sale, myself) be sure to include the prices and be ready to negotiate. I've bought a lot things out of the want ads and I rarely ever call on anything that doesn't list the price.

I hadn't thought of Craigslist. We live a couple hours from the largest city that particiates, but maybe others from my area check the ads. I have made a pricelist that includes asking price and lowest accepted. I want to be ready with numbers.
Anything that doesn't sell will get donated to a local charity that picks up items, and we will get a break on our taxes.
I won't include prices...at least not in the newspaper classified. It is really expensive, so the ad is more general. They do offer a "free" online ad when you purchase a classified. That ad can be longer and include pix, so I will take advantage of that as wel.

Craigs List is a good idea. I've purchased furniture there before and I've been very happy. I'd try that first, then you might want to try ebay. I haven't sold furniture on ebay, but a lot of people do and people buy it. Just list in your ad that they have to come and pick it up.

In my newspaper, they have a $105 and under section, and to place ads in there are free. so Maybe your newspaper has something like that? If not, I would each item by itself, I look more at single items than bunches of items. JMO.

Hmm, that makes sense. I probably wouldn't call without a price listed either. MandiDawn, our paper has something similar, but only up to $50, and you can only have one listing per week.
I'm going to call the paper again and find out if there is a special rate if you buy several small ads or something along those lines.
I'm also working on longer ads for Craigslist. I looked at ads on there last night to see what others list. They were kinda sparse, word wise. I'm going to include that we are a child-free, pet-free, smoke-free home. Every piece we're selling is in mint condition, but that is such an often used phrase that I'm not sure it means anything.
I'll let y'all know how the items sell.
