    Default Selling processed food?

I process food, usually fresh from the market gardens, Farmer's market or friends. DD#1 has approached me about groceries and their high cost these days. She's looking for cheap groceries. I told her I had this stuff and she could have some of it, if she wanted...we weren't going to starve...we were a family. However, in order to keep the gluttony and waste under control, I did suggest she pay me a nominal fee for it.

I'm still not sure I should charge anything though. She and her dh will both be university students working part time this fall. What would be a reasonable price to charge for say, a jar of canned peaches or a pound of frozen spinach? I was thinking about saying $1/jar, as long as she returns the canning jars with their lids, and the plastic bags. What do you think? Or maybe I should just give it to them to help them go to university?

Wow, I'm not sure I would know how to answer this one. I would probably just give it to them, but that's me. My mom wouldn't have charged me for things like that, so I doubt that I could charge for them either, JMHO.

Well my mom would never charge me for anything like this.
I would suggest either she help you can it - or that you give her a set amount in the beginning and that's it. She won't waste it if that's all she gets and that way you can decide up front how much you can part with.

I like Mandi's idea. I think you should have her help you with the canning/processing. That way she can learn what it entails. I doubt the food will go to waste if they are on such a tight budget.

She's already informed me she doesn't want to help with the canning/processing. She says she doesn't have time...or the interest. At least she's honest!

I wouldn't charge her but definitely ask her to return the jars etc, they can be very expensive to replace. Better yet, ask her to go to her nearest thrift shops in her city and find you more jars!!!! Tell her that would replace your birthday or Christmas gift this year.....lots of clean jars for next years crop!

How about charging her a 'deposit' of 50c per jar or bag. She gets it back when she returns them to you for reuse.

Either that or some nominal fee. It's never too early to learn that life is NOT a free ride.

I agree with Valerie. Those jars can add up ($$$)
