I just opened a seller's account a few days ago. Nobody's bid on anything, but that's beside the point.

ebay charges 30 cents per item, or at least, that's what I'm being charged for my items: clothes, books, that kinda thing.

Ebay is extremely slow during the end of August. This is a good time to get your feet wet, as the busy months are just ahead. I've been selling for almost 3 years now.

I usually look to see if there are any similar items and watch them. If they are not selling or selling for extremely low prices, I just wait. Right now may not be the best time to sell homeschool books. The best time for that is at the beginning of summer when most people are looking for next year's books.

My husband usually handles all of the ebay stuff, but I think if you don't sell, you can relist it for free. We sold quite a bit of stuff last month and i think our ebay bill as $11. I don't think we have paid more than that before.

Ebay charges 30¢ for items listed at 1¢ to $9.99 over $10 it's 55¢ and then over $20 or so it's more.If you use the ebay pic service, the first pic is free, others are 5¢.If I need to add more than one pic...I use www.freepichosting.com the service is free,no matter how many pics you use. There's also other sites that offer free or nearly free pic listings...andale.com and auctionwatch.com comes to mind....
It cost more to have a reserve($1.10 I believe) and add a pic to the gallery( 25¢)They also get a % of the final bid price.

Sometimes my ebay bill is over $50

Most people that I have bid on my items pay.I've had a few deadbeat bidders, but I just do the non paying bidder form and get my fees refunded and leave negative feedback.

I do believe ebay has it slow season.During the summer it's harder to sell with everyone on vacation and such. But summer is better to buy, because no one's bidding against you
