Default Those of you who work retail at nights..

what are your hours like? I only have a few more days left at my old job (yay!!) and after taking a break I'm thinking of applyinng for a retail job (like the grocery store next to us) to work a couple of nights a week while DH is home with DS. I'm just wondering what time does the typical evening shift begin?

Great question! When DS isn't exclusively breastfeeding, I would love to get a PT retail job at a grocery store

I work at Bath and Body works. On a typical night like tonight, I start work at 6:30pm, and work until 10:30pm. Most shifts are only 4 hours, unless it's busy season, then we get more hours. On average I work 2 weekdays, and the weekend. Usually an early shift on the weekends like 9am to 1pm so I have the rest of my day to spend with DH and DS.

it all depends on if you work at a store in the mall or one that is freestanding or in a strip mall. make sure you ask about the hours when you get called for an interview. when i worked in the mall, the latest we were there was 10. i worked in a small store, not a department store.
i have worked for 2 housewares stores that are big chains. both of those had later hours. at one time one of them wouldn't have a set time that we would leave. we were there until we finished the work reguardless of how long that took. i lucked out and usually worked with otehr people that wanted to get out at a decent time so they hustled. i heard about having to stay until 2am which i though was nuts. if there is a certain time you want to be home by because of the kids or school, you need to put that on your application under your availablility. most applications have a place to write what hours you are available to work. if you need to leave by 10pm write that on there. some places will start you at 4pm or later. we had a couple of girls that didn't come in till 6:30 and we usually worked till 10:30 or 11. it could be anywhere from 4 hour shifts to 6 hour shifts. just be upfront with them about what you are looking for.

Thanks guys for the info! Those type of hours sound good actually and I better remember put how late I'm available until in the application. Now I just gotta figure out where I'd like to work (every store seems to be hiring here). The grocery store would be ideal (since it's just around the corner), if they would offer those stocking etc. types of jobs, I used to work at the check out and didn't like it.

I work retail. My hours are M, W, F 5:45-10:15 and Saturdays from 1-10. Most retail you MUST work atleast one weekend day. I get called in a lot, but I never take the extra hours because I'm really at the maximum I want to work.

    Good luck!

I work retail grocery, and our store closes at 9, but we're scheduled until 10:30. The latest we've stayed is 11:15. The store I worked in before was a lot busier, and stayed open an hour later. It wasn't unusual for us to be there until midnight.

After we close, we have to straighten the shelves and put away all the things left at the registers or lying around, plus clean all the floors and register areas. Different people are assigned different things.

When I worked as a cashier at Wal-Mart, we didn't have to do anything but close and turn in our drawer. At Target, we closed down ten minutes before if we were closing, and cleaned our own registers.

I used to work retail at night for a small family owned store. I worked 4-9pm 3 days a week. The store closed at nine and that is when I could leave...no long nights. No weekends. No huge holiday rush or uniform to wear. If I ever go back to retail, it will only be for a small business.
