Part Time Job, is it worth it?
i dont have any kids, and its only DH and i at home. i currently have a very decent paying job, and work 35 hours a week (im salaried) but lately ive been thinking about picking up a part time job, something i could do during the week and in the afternoons.
i was thinking something along the lines of working behind a register. dh works saturday thru wednesday as it is and plays hockey (games/practices) monday, thursday and friday nights. that leaves me with lots evening time that i usually spend watching tv.
even if i only worked 15 hours a week, at two weeks and (what im thinking $6 an hour) thats an extra $150 or so every two weeks. does anyone here have a fulltime job and a part time on the side? what is your part time job?marie/andrea

How about taking a couple of classes, or something? I have worked behind a register, and it is not very fulfilling.

How about using your extra time to make Christmas and Birthday gifts or cook lots of freezer meals. Everyone needs a little down time. I remember you saying that you wanted to lose some weight, how about exercising during that time.
You could work two jobs, but most people burn out after awhile working two jobs.

Depending on where you worked you could get a discount too, don't forget that
I work part time most of the year, full time during the holidays night shift doing stock so I know the sales coming up and get a good discount

I've been considering this too. I work 40 hours a week and the pay is enough to get by. I really want more $ though to save and put towards some debt that I have. I was thinking a register type job too, I used to work 2 jobs and I did it for 3 years in a row. It was tiring and then I needed to work 2 jobs to just get by. Now I can live on what I make, I just can't save or pay down debt very quickly!

I'm single and work a full time job plus a parttime job. I get home about 3:30 pm and then work for a couple hours in the evening. You'd be surprised what a difference the extra income does for you when trying to pay down debt.

I'd love to but the tax on a second job here doesn't make it worthwhile but I would if it was

For me, it was a toss-up. I had a full-time job from 8:30 to 4:30 Monday to Friday.
worked evenings, and I spent most of my evenings cleaning up and relaxing. When we started calculating our debt, we realized that we had a lot more than we thought. Thus I got a part-time job, both to help pay off that debt (which never happened) and to give me something to work on when I got back to school in the fall. Fortuneately for me my part-time job is fairly easy, quiet and pays well. Plus my boss will let me study during quiet hours at the desk, which is excellent!
But on the other side of the coin, if we hadn't needed the money, I would've quit a while ago. I have absolutely no time to myself at all anymore -- I get 12 spare hours during the week to run errands and get any housework done. And housework is how I relax! It's a hobby and a past-time for me! I actually enjoy it! So when I'm at work, I feel guilty because I could be home cooking and cleaning, doing the things I love. It put a lot more pressure on
to keep things clean and while he does a fantastic job, better than any man I've ever known, it's not me doing the work and I really wish it was.
In other words, when school starts, that will take up about 25 hours of my workweek, and work will take up about 22. So I'll be very very happy for the extra 20ish that I'll be getting once my full-time job is over.If you're interested in frugal living, minimalism and and

I am a stay at home mom and decided to see it another way. I see how much I can save us by being at home. It would not be cost effective for me to travel to work so instead put effort into home baking etc...

I would agree with whoever said to give it a try if you want -- you can always quit after a decent trial. I have done full time/part time, and once full time/part time/little bitty part time, and it can be a killer. And register work is going to be on your feet work, so depending on your physical condition, it may be ok, or may be more exhausting than you think. On the whole, I guess my philosophy is that you never know until you try, and the extra money can certainly be nice.

You have nothing to lose by trying it. I would try it, and if it doesn't work, then spend your time taking classes or doing OAMC as others have suggested.

One thing I've found is that since I don't NEED my job I really enjoy it more, I don't HAVE to be there if I don't want to. It makes all the difference in the world. I'm always the first they call for extra hours and I always take them knowing it's helping knock out the mortgage debt
If it doesn't work out no skin off your nose, it's worth a try

I worked two jobs for four years. My second job was banquet serving, and I made an average of $100 per shift. Now that I've moved, I've been debating about getting a second job to help with financial goals.
