Medical Transcription
Can anyone tell me a legitimate place I can take these classes online? I prefer one that spreads the payments out over a long period of time. Thanks

I am within a month of finishing an online course with Career Step. Career Step is one of a limited number of courses that are accredited by the AAMT (now AHDI - Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity). I have been working full time while taking the course, and when I finish it will have taken me just over a year to complete. The course is formatted so that you go at your own pace, which worked great for me. By the time I am done I will have transcribed or typed over 1000 actual medical reports. Successful graduates of the CS program typically have no problem finding employement, and many companies will waive their requirement for previous experience for CS grads. There are other good programs as well. I can only speak for my experience with Career Step and say that by the time I finish my final I will feel well prepared to begin my new career.
You can get more information at careerstep.com (I'm sorry but I don't have enough posts yet to post the actual URL).
I will be leaving my full time job at a major computer software company at the end of September to work at home, initially part time, as an MT. I will also work as a vendor for the company I am leaving, part time and at home. Our household income will be reduced when I leave, and I will lose some amazing benefits, which is one reason I am glad I found the Village. I know people think I am crazy to leave such a good job, but it will be better for me, and my DH and DS, to work at home and reduce some of the stress in our lives. DS will be in 5th grade this year, and I don't want him coming home to an empty house once he gets into middle school.
Please feel free to PM me for more information about Career Step and MT work in general.

There is a Christian Health Care Group that a friend of mine has. She is a Worship Leader and has her own home business teaching piano by the Suzuki method. I can't post URL's yet but the name of the program is "Medi Share." Just do a search for Christian Health Care and it comes up. I don't have it but my friend always raved about it and I think its basis for health care is excellent! May not be for everybody but it may work for someone.

I do medical transcription from my home, but I never took any classes for it. I do orthopedic transcription and learned on the job. I had good typing skills and I have a good turn-around with my work. I do medical-legal reports.

That's exactly what I used to do. I see you're in CA too. You don't work for Adelberg's do you?
I did my training through At-Home Professions, but this was years ago. I think it was a really good program. It prepared me for real-life transcription work - mumbling, background noises, ESL (english as a second language) doctors, etc. I was really happy with my training and had an excellent reputation with my clients. I know AAMT certifies training programs now, and I know AHP isn't certified. I'm not sure why.
I had my own business for about five years. I stopped in 2000 because I got married and my husband was making plenty of money for us to live off of.
I really want to get back into it. My daughter is in kindergarten. My son should be in preschool, but we can't afford it. If I got back into it I could afford to take up the slack on our budget and put him in preschool so I'd have some uninterupted time to work.
NancyI may not be where I need to be, but thank God I'm not where I used to be.

You must be in a different area of the state. Adelberg's is a medical group here that does workers' comp evaluations.
If you worked for the same place I was going to ask you if you needed a sub.
A couple of those doctors were gnarly dictators. It used to take me forever to find a sub who could understand them.
Really great office to work for though. Nice doctors. Nice staff. Paid quickly.
I'm actually planning on calling them when I get my business license and equipment. So I wanted to make sure I wasn't stepping on your toes if you worked for them.
NancyI may not be where I need to be, but thank God I'm not where I used to be.

I've posted this link several times before, but I strongly urge anyone interested in medical transcription to visit Mtchat and spend a significant amount of time reading the forums there. There's an incredible wealth of info on the boards, and some very influential members of the medical transcription industry are active posters. You can learn everything you ever wanted to know about transcription and then some there.
I am an Andrew's School graduate, and I highly recommend them or M-TEC.~Amanda~
