Question is this a good idea for a small buisness?

I have been pondering this idea around in my head for a few years now and I think its time to make it a reality. I want to do event planning. Mainly weddings, babyshowers and bridal showers, but do them AFFORDABLE to the client. I did my entire wedding including venue, decor, food, entertainment and everything for 120guests for less than $5000.

I love planning the events and helping others plan theirs. Do you think this is a good idea??
I have looked around in my area and there really isnt any wedding planners or event planners in the area. Would you have any suggestions for names for the company?

    Thank you so much!

I think event planning is a great idea. For the most part you can start the business out of your home. Not sure on a name. Good luck!

I think it depends on where you are. Here in Indiana, the economy is getting soooo bad that I don't think it would fly. In a larger area it would probably do pretty well.

I think it's a great idea. Marketing yourself with as "affordable" in this economy could make the difference. Children's birthday parties could be a big one... I think that even with the economy hurting, people tend to still spend on their kids. Good luck!

I think it's a pretty good idea. The hardest part would be getting started, I would think. There is a lady here in our small town that does wedding photography. She got started by taking sports pics of the kids and then branched out into wedding photog.. She also does all other sorts of pictures but stays booked up months in advance with weddings to do. If you can get your foot in the door I think you could do all that you wanted to. You might look around for the wedding photographers and get acquainted with them. Perhaps they could help you out...?

As for a name....hhhmmmmm I'd have to think on that one for a while.

Thank you all so much for your input! I am doing alittle more research and I think I'm going to go to the bridal show in my city next month and be prepared with business cards. My friends and DH think its a great idea. and if i spread into children's birthdays as well it would be good. I live in the Rochester MN area and I think it could do well.

    Please keep your ideas commin

I think its a good idea.

I heard of a woman who offered children's parties as a package. She had 4 or 5 theams to pick from. One example was a old maids tea party. She has real china tea sets (bought at thrift store) and old lady costumes for the kids to wear. Basically the parents wear renting her supplies so they could save a ton by not havening to buy these things.

I think you should give it a try, what have you got to loose?

I was going to suggest go to a bridal show or even see if you can put business cards into the bridal shops.
Print flyers and put in stores and in the penny savers ( if you have that sort of thing )
another thing is put an ad on craigslist as services offered.
    Best of Luck to you.

This is a great post! I did theme parties for my kids as they were growing up. I always tought it would be fun to plan other folks kids parties! I love the idea of offering a few different themes! My hubby and I are looking for something to do together so that he could leave his job early or retire. I think this would fly in our area. I've noticed that folks around here seem to have big parties for theirs kids. We might just give this a try! I hope you do well and thanks for re-lighting a spark I had long ago.

Great Idea!!! I'm from southern MN so I know Rochester a little. I do think that it is large enough and has money enough for a business like your's to do really well. The kids parties etc. sound super but I was thinking of how many people have to spend special holidays in the hospitals there. Maybe offer small partys those people. Kids, adults, and seniors in hospitals would really like it and their family members who are not familliar with the city would appreciate the fun and convienience of such a service. Advertise all over the health care buildings, florist shops etc. You could do 3-4 small parties a day. Muffins, ballons, simple games, wrapping gift services (out of your car), etc. It might be short notice but I can see it work for all ages and all types of celebrations. Then the larger longer term parties, weddings, etc. would be a great mainstay of the business. Good luck and great idea!

I think it's a wonderful idea. I've considered it and would love to do it but in the very rural area I live in it just wouldn't work. People just don't have the money to have elaborate parties, let alone hire someone to plan them.
