Angry OK, I think I made a booboo today...

I signed up to be a Mary Kay consultant, under the impression that it was a 50% commission for all sales. After my person leaves and I start going through the material, I realize that you have to have an order of at least $300 to make any profit at all, then it is 40%, and you have to order like $600 to make 50%. I am TICKED!!! I feel like I was misinformed. I sent her an e-mail and told her if I read it right, then I am not interested, to please send my check back. What do you think? How should I handle this situation? There is no way, starting out with no inventory that I can make any money. I don't have the money to buy inventory up front, and I was going to take it an order or party at a time. Now I feel duped. Along with no sleep the past three nights, now I really feel down in the dumps. I was really looking forward to this too. Oh well....

OH Amy! She should have told you upfront exactly what was what! I tried MK years ago. I never did make any money at it.
If it was me and i didn't get my check back by tomorrow i would sop payment on it.
    Good luck to you dear!

I agree, the lady that signed you up should have told you EVERYTHING. I'm doing Southern Living at Home and the lady I signed up with made sure I knew everything....and best of all...once you buy your starter kit, you don't have to buy anything else and you don't have a limit or required sales...you start making 30% up front....no strings...i'm glad I didn't get sucked into a deal like that....

Sorry that happened to you, I hope that she will give you your money back....good luck to you!!!

I'm so sorry this happened to you. Go to your bank and immediately put a stop payment on your check before it gets cashed.

By law, you should have so many days to get out of the contract if you signed one. Not sure what the law is there though.

Hopefully it will all work out for you.

    Unhappy Thanks everyone!

You have really made me feel better. I gave the girl the check, but she hasn't sent it in to Mary Kay yet, so she should just be able to tear up the agreement and send my check back. I haven't received my starter kit yet either, so I should be able to get out of it.

The thing that really bothers me though, is that this is a good friend. I don't want to hurt our friendship, but I don't want to get taken advantage of either.

I believe you have 3 business days to cancel the agreement. So that's until Monday. If she's a friend, who needs enemies? I think I'd reconsider a friendship with a person like that. I hope she has enough integrity to give you your check back and to tear up the agreement.

Is there a possibility she was so excited to get a recruit she forgot her spiel? I do not remember much from when I signed on, I had an infant and a toddler at the time.

I know she is a friend and all, but I wouldn't wait for her to give you the check back. I would put a stop payment on it immediately. It might cost you a few dollars to do so but better safe than sorry.

She's a friend now... but think how you'll feel about her if you don't do anything and just try the MK thing and work your butt off for absolutely nothing!

    Unhappy You ladies are right.

I was so excited about this. I have been doing research the past couple hours (I know, baby is finally sleeping and I am on the computer!!!) and have found that there are other costs that I haven't been told about. You have to pay to go to the weekly meetings and everything!!! I also read that they are tought not to tell of the extra charges and the commission unless specifically asked about it.

Well, if I don't get my check back by Monday, I will put a stop payment on it. Thanks for all the wonderful advice. I now feel that if she was a true friend, she would not have done this.

I know just how you feel my Dh was in Amway All of these people spent so much money stocking inventory, and going to all these "inspirational" meetings that they had to pay for. No offense to anyone who does the Amway thing but it took up a lot of time, and resources and those were thing we just didn't have. I don't know how much the check you wrote was for but it costs 25.00 to stop payment on a check at out bank What a rip off. and just a FYI a stop payment is only good for a year at most banks after that the check can be cashed again. I heard that on a radio program once. I hope it all works out for you. I believe that things come to us when we are ready, I am sure you will find something else that you will enjoy just as much. I also wanted to reiterate about the three day back out on any legal contract she cannot keep your money. It may be a little hard to confront your friend but she will understand

    Good luck,

    Nealy

My sil does MaryKay and has been doing it for 10 years. She does not see that it is a pyramid scheme. It doesn't matter how we try to explain it to her, she spends thousands on inventory. It's ridiculous.
