His Dad reports he is doing very well. There is the anticipated bruising of his brain but that was expected. He was deemed well enough to have x-rays taken of everything today but no news on anything else that is broken.

He has deliberate movement on the left and some uncontrolled movements on his right. They will place a PIC line in and remove the central line. This should cut down on the risks of infection.

Today, he was seen by the neurosurgeons, the plastic surgeons and the general surgeons.

It is amazing the "regenerative powers" that kids have at his age.

The family is in the wait and see stage and all the grandparents are there so the family has good support but it is going to be a long recovery for this little guy.

Thank you all for your goodness.

He continues to do well. They have been chasing his blood pressure for the past day... too high... too low.... too high ...

He has the one line now so that will give him some freedom of movement. Nothing else has been reported broken. He is squeezing Dad's hand weakly but purposefully with his right so that is an improvement.

Greebo and I will be watching their Jack Russel Terrier for the foreseeable future until they can return home and have a more normal day. As Dad put it:
I know some people have asked about sending food. Desmond & E's(little sister) preschool classes (actually, the whole preschool) has set up something whereby they are coordinating meals, to make sure that things get spread out reasonably over time as he recovers, rather than everyone helping out at once with a lasagna or a kugel or something, and then we just have five tons of quiche to figure out how to store! Thank you for the offers, but I trust that a bunch of Jewish Mother's will have food more than covered!

It appears overall that life is getting better. The 72 hours is almost up and the biggest concern is the blood pressure. There has been a more accurate weight taken so that may help them dose the meds better.

    The update from Des' Mom:
We made it to the 72 hours! He has been pretty stable since last night, which is great. They are starting to look at scheduling his surgeries probably on Thursday. He is still having minor blood pressure issues, but we haven't seen any new issues, which makes me feel really happy.

He was the catalyst for a new hospital policy though, go Desmond. He has an inter-cranial pressure gage on his brain and they wanted to get an MRI. In the adult ward the neurosurgeons give the order and the nurses bundle up the patients and do everything. In pediatrics they don't often have this issue so the nurses aren't use to the monitor and can't fix it for the MRI. So they have decided the new rule is head MRIs are okay with the gage, Spinal MRIs can't be done with it. Since Desmond needs a spinal one to see if there is any damage, it means no MRI. This is apparently not a major deal and won't change his surgery schedule so all is good there. He will eventually get the MRI but probably not till Friday or Saturday after his surgery has been done.

Other then that no real updates the teams are coming around to figure out what they are doing surgery wise, the plastic surgeons told Dad that they think he will only need 1 surgery and no follow up surgeries, but they obviously don't know until they start working on him if that will hold up or not.

He is doing great. He did try to open his eye last time he woke up, which while it isn't something we want him doing, was a great thing to see him attempting to do. We have upped his sedation medication a bit to see if that slows his every 2 hour wake ups, since they are great to see, with the breathing tube in, it makes us have to jump to restrain him so he doesn't knock it out.

Today is just another waiting day, but we are now out of the major worry zone, which is such a relief and we are beginning to get a plan as to what is going to happen at least in the next few days, which feels nice to have an idea of what is going on.

Yay for 72 hrs! The younger two are a bit clingy to Mom when she is home which is understandable. I am so very relieved for them and even though there is still a lot to come, the first days are the worse.

What a nightmare for all who love him... your whole world can change in the blink of an eye. All my best to Desmond and his family. Healing wishes as each surgery brings him closer to being the feisty, fun loving kid I'm sure he was before this all happened.

Wonderful too how you and others are doing whatever you can to ease the worries & lift the spirits of this family.
