So disappointed
I know in the grand scheme of things, this is minor. . . but still.
I finally opened up my wedding dress (was going to see if Brenda could use my veil). The dress is yellowed, and there is a HUGE tear in the skirt. I don't remember tearing the skirt. And the veil was all mashed together-- and there are huge tears in it too. :`(
So-- at any rate-- Deana tried on my dress, and was amazed to discover that she could JUST BARELY squeeze into it. She had to suck it up to get the dress zipped. She could not imagine that I was that skinny at one point in my life
I weighed less than 100 lbs. when I got married.

I am so sorry Denise. Is there any chance that it can be repaired? I have heard of dry cleaners being able to take the yellow out of gowns before, or if not maybe it could be dyed ivory if Deana or one of your DILs to be would like to wear it.
I hope you can get it all taken care of.

Well, if it weren't for the tears, I would say take it to the drey-cleaner. My family's "heirloom" Christening sets were quit yellow, and they came back from the dry-cleaners sparklingly perfect.
Is there any chance a good seasmstress could repair or embellish over the tear?
If not, can you at least use some of the material to make her something she can wear on her wedding day?

I'm sorry to hear that Denise. At least it ended in a good way with dd having to squeeze into it
I had my youngest dd try mine on not long ago and even though it wasn't tight on her, I think she was quite impressed with now near it was to a fit for her too (I look at her think she's so tiny).

It's possible. . . the tear is along the bottom- near the lace trim. . . but the sheer material shredded some.Originally posted by Kimberlina

Brenda wasn't really interested in wearing my dress or anything-- we were just looking for ways to cut expenses for the upcoming wedding-- and if my veil had been useable, she'd have worn it.
I'd like to have the dress for sentimental reasons though.

Well, here's an idea- if you don't think anyone will be wearing the dress, maybe you would like to make some Christmas ornaments for your kids with the material. Now that it is torn, it may be easier for you to do something like that. Little heart-shaped wedding dress sachet ornaments or something like that would be a very thoughtful and treasured wedding gift. It is just a thought, and that way you know that your beloved dress is going to still mean something to someone, KWIM? The tear wouldn't be all for nothing.
(Still sorry about your dress, though.)
I was just thinking about this the other day- trying to decide what to do with my dress. I don't want DD to feel like she needs to do anything with it, so I may just sell it or go ahead and make something with it.
Veils aren't all that hard to make, if you are still looking to save money on one. My mother made mine for about $15. We went to AC Moore and got the pre-made veil part for about $10, then bouht an inexpensive but very elegant looking roll of wired off-white 2" wide ribbon with a little pattern in it.. My mother made it into a simple bow, then embellished it with a couple little beaded sprays and flowers we picked up in the same section of AC Moore. She used wire to attach the bow to a clear hair comb. Then she took the veil and attached velcro to it and the hair comb/bow. That way I could have my hair done and drive to the church without having to wear the veil the whole time, and I could remove the veil for the babushka dance. It turned out very nice and I have it as a decoration on a shelf in my china cabinet.
I'm downloading music right now, but I will post pistures for you tomorrow if you are interested.

That would be great Kimberly! I'd love to see the pictures. . . we've looked at making them-- I'm passable with a sewing machine . . . .
She wants a tiara , and I'm not sure how to attach a veil to that though. I'd love to see pictures of how you did yours.
I love the idea of making ornaments and sachets from my dress! I just might do that-- later. . . . after I get used to the idea of my dress being ruined.

So sorry to hear that Denise. Maybe a great seamstress can mend the dress. As Kimberly mentioned, maybe an embellishment will cover the tear.

It's possible that you could have the tears repaired and put lace over the tears. Then it won't be noticeable. Sorry it happened!

Unfortunately the tear is along the lacy edge-- and the sheer material has shredded considerably.
I'll have a friend of mine (who is a seamstress) take a look at it, but I really feel like keepsake ornament and sachets are in my future.
