I claim Thanksgiving as our own holiday, for our own little family unit. I also invite over our neighbor. His family lives out of state and I don't like the thought of him spending the day alone.

Hubby has to work so he'll need to leave our house at about 2:00, so we are going to do an earlier meal than normal. I'm hoping to get dinner on the table between 11-12.

    Menu plan so far:

    ham
    stuffing
    green bean casserole
    rolls
    sweet potatoes
    pasta salad
crack potatoes (recipe found on pinterest)
    cranberry relish
    watergate salad

For a dessert, I am thinking of trying some kind of berry cobbler. Wesley has requested a fruit basket cake. Chocolate Fruit Basket Cake Recipe | Taste of Home Recipes

I will also make some sort of snack-y or dessert to send to the police department with the husband.

ETA: a lot of my items will be preassembled in the day or two before Thanksgiving. Then all I have to do is pop them in the oven.

And I realize that looking at this looks like a lot of food for 3 adults and two children, but neighbor Dave doesn't eat the best unless I'm cooking for him. And he helps us a lot throughout the year. So I like to spoil him.

I had a friend that worked on both Thanksgiving and Christmas Day - I took over a 'plate' (food in tupperware) for them and whomever else was around. Why should they have to miss the yummiest part of the holiday? If you get the word out soon enough, I'm sure someone will keep you in their thoughts and do the same

This sounds bad but they have every holiday at their grandma's house - she's 90, can't get around easily and is very sweet - but her house is so depressing and yucky. She never opens the shades, it smells like old lady smell, it's just so yucky to be there. My bf's mom cooks at the grandma's house and then my bf and his bro usually bring a side dish or dessert. They also go there for Xmas eve - yuck!

I have a big beautiful house and am very "Martha" - I like to make things beautiful and special. I love holidays at my place... Well, I'm thinking maybe I can bring her two small scented pumpkin spice candles, some flowers and a small pumpkin to at least make the place look somewhat festive.

Of course I'm thinking of the long term - bf and I are talking marriage - and of spending every holiday at this place - ugh. Well, who knows how long she'll live there or if she'll go to a nursing home. Maybe if we get married we can suggest a holiday at my place and we can his mom pick her up and drive her up here.
Maybe toss it out there during dinner convo that you'd love to host a dinner at your house (not necessarily a holiday) and see how everyone feels. Then you could semi-coordinate who could pick up/drop off grandma and/or if she'd feel comfy doing that. She may be complacent with everyone coming to her house but if given the opportunity to go out, she may jump at it?

I also like the American tradition of Thanksgiving as an extended family celebration, we don't have that here. And our family has 8 kids and I'd love a celebration where we all come together when they have their own families. No other holiday works for that.

And did I mention there's gravy on Thanksgiving?
Dave - youre my kinda guy! Holidays are totally all about the gravy!!

We've already celebrated the Canadian Thanksgiving here with my family and are now going down to the US to celebrate with DH's family. There best be gravy as well or I may have to show MIL how we do it Now we get to celebrate twice too!

We started picking up our food this past week. We just need our turkey, ham, and drinks. Oh, and our fresh veggies, but we get those the day before. I will make cupcakes and brownies too.

I'm still missing my bird. . . but DH's company's owners sent a Butterball check for 20.00 (WOW! I'm impressed!). I guess it works like a coupon, not sure, though.

I'm also a nurse and have to work Thanksgiving day, but I get the day after off. So we'll do our Thanksgiving on Friday instead of Thursday.

Normally it's just DH, DD and I, as all our family is on the other end of the country. We live in Orlando area; my family is in Seattle and DH's is in Maine. But this year, my neice and her hubby moved to Miami, so they will come up and have Thanksgiving with us. It'll be nice to have some extended family for the holiday again!
