I'm 57 and still not a grandmother yet.
But.....when the time comes, I plan to be super frugal in other areas so that I can spoil my grandchildren silly.
But spoiling can also be done in ways other than money.______

So true. And I meant "spoiling" in the nicest way, I wont be the party-no-rules-grandma, but I just want to stay in her life and the distance is making me feel I might lose touch.
In the next couple of weeks I'll be working on the nursery, cleaning it and getting it ready. I think I'll find and frame some baby pictures of my daughters for the room, put my own "grandma" touches on it. Going to see if I can get a baby picture of daddy as well to frame.LDR

Electric Usage Challenge (doing well, under $70 most months)
Yah, I suck at this money stuff, I know. That's why I'm here.

I love the idea of the framed "baby" pictures of the parents!
I am a new grandma (Oct. 25, 2011).
Might just be my personality, but I do not feel the need to be pressured by the two other sets of grandparents. I have been single for many years, and don't have the means to compete even if I felt the urge.
What I have decided to do is very simple. Although I do not like clutter, I have always loved polar bears. So, this year I have decided that I will collect small polar bears, and by the time my grandson is able to help, they will come out at Christmas, and this will be our special time together, setting them all out. Bake some cookies together while listening to Christmas carols. A yearly special memory.
Congrats to you!

My kid's grandparents all live far away, but have been able to stay close through emails and letters. My mom will video herself reading a story so I can play it to my kids. They LOVE this. She also sends them small blank cards that she has written messages to them in. She often includes funny pictures of herself as a child, newspaper articles or comics she thinks they will like, and etc. They each have a shoebox FULL of her notes and love to look through them.
The clothing and toys that have been sent don't last. It is the personal messages, handmade gifts, and video messages that my kids cherish. Isn't it wonderful that those are the frugal things!
A baby can't read, but can hear your voice reading or singing if you record it and send it.
