Default Another thing to remember while you're running that A/C

is to leave the thermostat alone. Set it and forget it. Our A/C man told us that we cost ourselves more money by turning it up when were hot and down when we're cold.... . It has to run 3 times as long to cool the walls, and everything in the house off. I never thought of it that way but it does make sense. I'm working hard at staying away from the dang thang.

Good point, especially this time of year. I am tempted some mornings to kick the heat on because it is a bit chilly when I first get out of bed, but I've been leaving the thermostat alone.

Thanks for the tip Lisa. I had not thought of it that way either but it makes sense and it will help me remember to leave the thermostat at one setting and to keep my fingers off of it.

I wonder how that works for window units. We don't have central air here. I use the economy feature but I wonder if it works harder by turning on and off.

Default How do you keep you & your home cool without air conditioning?

Back to basic stuff. Here (in upstate NY) I open the windows at night to let the cooler air in and in the morning when it's warmer out than in, I close the windows a bit (leave it open for some circulation) and pull the shades to the opening. I also use fans especially ceiling fans. I also dress in no sleeve shirts and do my cooking outdoors, or early morn or in a crockpot in the basement or outdoors or have no cook meals. Big tip, Move slow, lol.

    In South eastern PA:
ice cold lemonade, washing my face and neck with cold water, frequent showers in cold water (landlord pays water bill), sprinkling water on my face and turning on the fan toward me. At night windows are open and fan acts as an exhaust. Also sleeping in as little (or no) clothes.

We heard a tip for keeping cooler not long after we got refridgerated air in our house. Freeze a few milk jugs of water, sit one in a cake pan (to catch the condensation) in front of fan blowing in your direction.
