I'm not sure of the cost savings. Might take a bit more research.

Wow we went to home depot as they had a cheaper cost on the 50 gallon electric, we purchased it for $290 and installed it ourself.

ETA: ours has a 6 yr warranty also!

We'll be getting a tankless heater when it comes time to replace ours. It takes nearly 3/4 a gallon of water to run out of the tap before the water is hot enough for washing dishes! We save the water while we are waiting, but I will be glad to have instant hot water!

Currently we have a traditional water heater, but once that quits, we will probably replace it with a tankless water heater.

    Debt as of 10/25/09:

    Student Loan: Currently $9500

    Mortgage: $472,000
    Discover CC: $6500 at 0%
    Chase Disney: $3000 at 0%

    Goals:
Get monthly food budget down to $200/month for me and my husband.

Tankless heaters use more energy (electric or gas) while in use. The savings come from not having a tank of hot water losing heat all day long.

I was going to say the exact same thing. It is a very easy project. I am not a super handy man, either.
