Supplemental Interior Heat Source

My neighbor was touting his new "space" heater but claimed it was safer than others out there. It runs on antifreeze. I have never heard of such a thing and can't imagine haveing antifreeze inside my house incase of a spill with pets. He is very frugal (IE-won't let his tenants use the dryer because it uses power he pays for) and smart (retired electrical & chemical engineer), researches everything he does to the ninth degree. So I tend to think this is a viable option.

Anyone know of this?

(Yeah I know that I could ask my neighbor & could get the scoop on about ins & outs but I don't want to be able to build it just get the gist of it.)

No. I have never heard of this. The big thing in heaters around here are the Eden-pure things. My parents bought one of those and really like it. Our local electric coop ran a test on it and proclaimed them (not that brand, but that type) to be efficient if used correctly.

Are you sure he didn't mean it has an anti-freeze setting? That type of setting keeps a room from going below 45 or so, to avoid freezing pipes.

AFAIK "antifreeze" is not a viable energy source, so I don't know how a space heater could "run on one"... so I'd like to know more.

We've been using an Infrared Heating System - Sun Cloud (similar to the Eden Pure) for several years now. It costs abour 13-cents an hour (thermostate - and is not constantly on) - or about $1 a day to run (on average). We use it as our primary source of heat in the living/dining/kitchen area, until it gets in the teens or colder.

Whatever type of space heater you use, make sure you check with your home insurance agent. Some space heaters aren't covered by your home insurance, or your ratings can be increased from using some kinds of space heaters.

The Sun Cloud is completely safe around children and pets. You can throw a blanket over it and it would still run safely. We have a friend who has one and his son does his homework on it - using it as a little side-table. No toxic, or potentially toxic substances to contend with.
