Default I'm going to turn off.....

I'm going to turn off my home phone. I can save at least $30 per month. It hardly ever rings. The people who do call (parents, children, friends, ) call my cell phone--they are in my circle.

Can you think of any reason I need a house phone?

My kids are homeschooled so I wont expect any calls from the school nurse or anything like that.

Out of the last 14 days, I've had 3 calls.

I just want to have thought everything thru....know what I mean?

Lucky girl, I'd love to get rid of ours but we need it for the internet and we are in an area that doesn't get a great signal for our cells.

My cell phone signal drops to nothing as I come up my drive, and I'm on call 24/7, so no such luck for me.

Mine doesn't ring much anymore either, but I don't have a desire to get rid of it. It costs $18 a month - I can live with that. Our cell service isn't the greatest here at the house. Also, think about 911. You can dial it from your house, put the phone down and walk away and they will know where you are. Can't do that from cell phones.

Just an observation on this. I don't know if its different from state to state, but you can still dial the operator and 911 even if your phone has been disconnected.

I would drop it if you don't have a need for it. I would drop mine, but we also use it for internet. There is no other internet service available except satellite, and the no-frills phone line and internet chargers don't even come to half of what that would cost.

We've never had a land line. Our internet is on cable. The only other reason to have a landline is because of a house alarm. That is it, I'd get rid of it if I were you.

We did that a few months ago (August) and we really don't miss it at all. We do have magicjack though and that never rings. I love the savings though!

We dropped ours about a year ago. DH and I both had cell phones already, so since we used those primarily, it seemed to make sense.

The only thing problem I have found with it, is that as my kids get older, they don't have a "community" phone to use. They are only 7 and 4 right now, but I think eventually we are going to have to get a cell phone that stays here at the house, for those guys. In a few years when they are old enough to stay home by themselves (it'll still be awhile) they will need something for emergency. But the plus side, is that I can add a line to mine for $9.99, so it is still cheaper than having a home phone!

I was going to drop it recently too but decided not to. I did, however, drop all of the extra services we never use. So we have very basic service and are saving quite a bit of money and not missing the services we rarely used! Our (newish - a year old) phone has an answering machine attached to it, so dropping voicemail was a no-brainer. Anyone who really needs to reach us uses our cell phone numbers anyway.

We just dropped our land line also. It was costing $44/mo and like other posters, we only got called by telemarketers.

I tried to take it down to just 911 service, but we were not income eligible for the "lifeline" plan. The cheapest option they offered us, even though we explained all we wanted was to be able to call 911, was a pay per minute plan that was going to cost $18 a month even if we had zero usage. That seemed like a lot for a line where any call made, local or not, would cost 5 cents a minute. So we went ahead and dropped our service. No problems so far...

we dropped ours 2 yrs ago (internet thru cable) and didn't miss it until now...because of the nature of my business (landlord-tenants call every 5 minutes...worse than a pack of kids).... they are running my cell phone thru the roof and i had to switch to the extended plan (100.00 month unlimited calls) all of these calls are local and having to carry such a high plan is costly when i could just go back to the minimum plan of 39.99- 450 mins....without tenants i never went over it)... i am going back to a landline ($20-no frills) and the basic cell plan ($40) and i am still coming out ahead...tenants get the home number and only friends and family or long-distance get the cell number... going back to when life was less complicated and cheaper...

if you think you might burn up the lines with talking to friends and family and they would be local calls i would weigh the options....450 mins go really fast....
