    Default Turned Off The Heat

I turned the heat off in our house last night. It's been hovering around zero in the mornings and at night time for a few weeks now. We've even found it hot at night in the house for the last week and had windows open during the day. Figured it was safe to turn it off up here in the Great White North. Except now they're saying it's gong to -10 over night.

Sometimes it just feels like you can't win!

We have not been able to turn off the heat yet here.

I'm also leer about doing so when the temps gets below freezing.

I don't turn it on unless it is below zero, the house stays warm enough without it if it isn't freezing out. That's 0ºC, maybe you mean 0ºF, I don't know how cold that is.

    Monkeywrangler... 0(f) = -17.7(c)

I have been turning the heat down more and more lately. I think I will put it completely off today. I don't directly pay for the heat (rolled in to condo fees) and I know there are buildings taking up more than their fair share... but I am considering it as practice when we get a "grown-up house" aka, not a condo

-17 or 0 it's all the same to me. FREAKING COLD. Anything below 50 and I have the heat on. OF course I realize this is all relative to your natural climate. Florida homes were just not built to stay warm.

we have a couple little space heaters that we can pull out and put on if the rooms get chilly, but yes i agree with the pp that said it's all about natural climate. after a winter here of -20 to -40 Celsius weather Zero is a heat wave!

I am there with you.........at least in the morning to take the chill off.........haven't had my heat off yet. And if we are not getting rain, it is wind............that cuts right through you!!

Always "wondered" about homes in FL and Calif.........seems like when you have to run the AC it would benefit you to insulate. I remember in San Diego if it got anywhere NEAR freezing people would freak about their pipes freezing!!

Wouldn't it save $ on the AC to insulate???

I know exactly what you mean, AnnK. We lived in Hollywood in the early 1960's, transplanted from Boston and our house down there was CBS with only a wall gas heater in the LR and a small electric wall heater in the small bathroom. We did have carpet on the terrazzo floors except for the kitchen.

Boy, howdy, when it's 50 degrees in Florida is it cold!

I'm such a wuss, my house is set at 62f at night and during the hours I'm at work, and 65f when we're home. Sometimes I even bump that up to 68f because I'll get chilled even wearing sweaters, my nose will run, fingers cold, I just don't want to wear outdoor clothes and mittens in my own house. I want to be comfortable.

At night I have two large dogs to snuggle and a mattress pad heater. My house is relatively new, 8 years old, and insulated with good windows, I just am so cold at lower temps. I've considered moving to AZ some day. I tolerate heat much better.

With babies in the house, we keep our heater at 71. Its been in the 70s and 80s though for much of the past few weeks, so it hasnt kicked on much. We've had to open all the windows and doors a few times to cool down. None of the houses I've ever lived in around here have ever had air conditioners, it just doesnt get that hot that often.
