Adjustable thermostat
Has anyone installed an adjustable theromstat for the gas furnace? We bought one yesterday and intend to install it. I plan to set this to 68 in the day time since I work from home and am here all day and turn it down to 62 or 64 at night. Will need to wear long pants, sweaters and socks or slippers this winter! What does everyone else set theirs to? Have you seen a difference in heating costs from using this? Pros or cons?

We installed one a couple years ago and I love it. When I program the time and temps I write a chart for me to look at so I don't get confused. I think it has made a difference in our utility bills.

We've talked about getting one for years. So far we haven't. I turn our temps down just before I go to sleep at night and then turn the temps up first thing in the morning.

We bought one for our oil boiler recently, and I haven't installed it yet. I tried to last week, but the wires on the old one aren't labelled at all and now I don't know what to do. Guess I will have to call the oil guys to come install it.

We bought one last year and it does make a difference in the heating and air conditioning bill.
I have a little piece of paper taped on the inside of the flip-up door that has the temperature settings on it. If I change it, I change the paper, so I don't forget.

Okay, I just decided I was going to research this enough to install one. I did my homework and figured it out.
I don't know about saving on the bill (though I imagine it will) but I can tell you this much- the installation was VERY, VERY easy, and I imagine it would be a 3 minute job if you didn't have to trace all the wires back to the furnace because they are unlabeled....

Last year, it was set at 62 degrees at all times. If we were going to be home and I didn't have the woodstove going, I might raise it up to 65.

we bought one for every house since 1982. Each one pays for itself in under a year. Around 9 to 10 months payback.
Many utility companies have a discount or rebate plan when you buy one of these.
They are a tremendous energy saver.
Ours is set for 68 during the day, and it drops to 65 at night, and rises to 70 a half hour before dh gets out of bed (he is chilly in the mornings).
and it drops to 68 again when he is gone.
Ours has several setting periods, you don't just have to do day and night, but you can zone the day according to your needs.
For example if nobody is home during the day, set it to 65, and program it to go up to 70 a half hour before everyone arrives from work and school. 68 after dinner, and 65 overnite, and 70 for the half hour just before rising in the morning again.
Weekends can be programmed separately (dh does that too) so it drops while we are away at church, rises when we get back, and its around 68 for all day Saturday.
