Long undies, anyone?
I bought some CuddleDuds (long undies, made of a thin, silky fabric) at Sam's Club this past weekend. They ran about $12 for each top or bottom.
Keeping the house at 60, I've been experimenting:
* First, CuddleDuds are not cuddly; they're quite thin.
* My normal winter uniform is a denim skirt, topped w/ a turtleneck and a pullover. I usually wear cotton socks and shoes, but I have recently discovered the beauty of wool socks.
* LONG PANTS: Yesterday, I tried the CuddleDuds pants under jeans. And then I went for a walk. Yes, they were considerably warmer than jeans alone would have been. I didn't really notice any extra bulk or weight. And the silky stretchy fabric wasn't irritating, despite my leg stubble! (I was wearing synthetic socks -- 'cosy socks' from Sam's Club).
* TOPS: Took an afternoon shower, then tried the CuddleDuds long-sleeve top under my turtleneck. Denim skirt. I didn't wear my customary pullover. But I wore 'cozy socks' again. I found that I was almost, though not quite, as warm as with a turtleneck and pullover. I had a cold spot in the center of my back. And I sat with an afghan on my lap when I watched TV. Again, the weight or bulk didn't bother me.
* TOPS, PART 2: Today, I'm wearing a heavy knit skirt, washable wool socks, shoes, and all 3 layers on top -- CuddleDuds top, cotton turtleneck shirt, chenille pullover. I've been quite comfy, even when sitting still to read to the dear kiddies. The house temp is set to 60; although the rooms that are getting sunshine are around 64 degrees.
CONCLUSION: I think I'll pick up some more tops when I'm at Sam's Club next month. They aren't bulky; the silky fabric isn't irritating my skin. And they do seem to keep me warmer. Since I don't wear pants often, I'll just get a couple more tops.
Now, where do I find CuddleDuds for kids? And how do I get the kids to wear something so unfashionable as long underware!?!

I've never had a problem with the kids wearing long underwear either. They keep them warm and whenever the are getting cold they will run and put them on.
Most kids wear long pants/jeans anyways and who is going to see what's under them. Far better to be warm than freeze!!

I think it's a frugal answer to cold weather. That price is very good and if you feel warm when wearing them. What's not to love.
When my son was getting ready to go to Canada, the first thing he bought was thermal underwear. He's 24. The first time he put it on he said he felt like a ballet dancer. LOL!

Long underwear is completely practical.
Dh has superwash wool ones. I find them a bit scratchy when I wear them
OH MY!
this is TMI, but I do. Just realized how this will read but it's the truth of things around my place and probably looks quite normal to other Canadians LOL!
He wears a pair to work in the winter, and I wear another older set with mended moth holes to keep warm round the house.
They wash up fine and keep us both warm and healthy.

I love my Cuddleduds too. I have been wearing them for over ten years. I have two full pairs at the moment, but I do have heavier long underwear for the negetive temps. I hate being cold! I never wore them as a kid no matter what my parents would say I would rather freeze, boy was I stupid!

I love cuddle duds! I bought some at Sams club also (mine were 10.99) I guess the prices are not the same in all stores. I bought a black set and a pink set. I had not seen pink before they must be new. I really feel the cold in my legs and the cuddle duds keep me warm. Regular thermal make me itch

I wear a lot of tights during the winter with my skirts. Tights would also work under pants. My staple is black so I wear a lot of black tights. L.L. Bean or Lands End might have long underwear for kids.

I bought some long underwear last year at walmart. I am not sure of the name but they also were the silky kind. I love them. I have worn them under a long skirt and they do great. I have also wore them under pants and loved them. I do need another pair. Think I will see if Walmart have any in tomorrow when I go.
