Default Ways to feel warmer in a cold house ...

I thought it would be a good idea to make a list of ways to feel warmer in a cold house.

Wear a T-shirt (remember when kids and men always did this??)
Wear tights (I actually have wool ones from LLBean)
Wear a camisol (I'm flat chested and wear one instead of a bra. It really helps)

Place chase with the kids in the house. My sister says I'm the only person she knows who encourages their kids to run in the house. Our house has a square figure 8 on the first floor. So it's good running.

    Eat soup.

Drink a hot beverage (tea, coffee, apple cider, or hot chocolate.

    Hand wash the dishes.

    Vacuum.

Hmmm, playing chase sounds more fun! We have a mini-tramp (a jogging trampoline). The girls jump for a long time!

If I'm sitting I find my feet get much colder if they are on the floor. If I elevate them on an ottoman, in a recliner or by streching them out on the couch they stay much warmer.

We wear sweaters and sweats. Also bringing he dogs in seems to help add to the body heat index, lol. I have afghans and blankies handy and we drink a lot of hot cocoa and hot tea. I also try to bake caseroles and things in the oven so we have more heat and accomplish dinner too.

I always boil something on the stove. We wear my homemade slipper socks. They are funky but very warm. And I have a bunch of old quilts to cuddle under. Plus I make everyone a new pair of long johns every year.

Take a hot bath and then put on some warm fleece.

Fleece socks are wonderful with wool slippers.

Don't forget after that warm bath to leave the water in the tub until it cools. It really seems to help!

Fix a hot cup of something to drink and hold the warm mug.

I've also been taking a 12 oz soft drink bottle filled with hot water to bed with me. It has helped take the chill out of the cold bed until I'm able to get to sleep. Works great! You could use one during the day as well, just keep it close by or in your lap and warm your hands.

I self clean my oven on the coldest days. Layered clothing is in dd's always wear at least 2 layers. Slipper socks you can get used to them. I keep my house cool in the fall so we can acclimate ourselves to the cooler temps over the winter. Pots of soup and lots of hot chocolate. My dh has requested some long underware for the winter. Not only a first for him but a break-through in his lessons on saving money. Find the warmest room in your house and encourage gathering there. For us it's the living room. I break out the old Richard Simmons Sweatin to the oldies tapes. Who doesn't need the exercise?

We always get a little warmer when company comes over I won't make them freeze and turn up my thermostat a little. And when it's just too darn cold instead of just a little chilly I slowly drag my self over to the thermostat and increase the heat after all I am not into suffering.

I use a rice bag (heated in the microwave) on my lap under a fleece blanket while reading or watching tv at night and sipping a cup of tea. Dress in layers, wear socks to bed, snuggle close to my very warm husband, sleep with a cat. When I feel chilly during the day, I get moving. Nothing warms me up quicker than being active by cleaning something. Yesterday I tackled the attic and had to remove at least one layer.

    Wear layers and long underwear.
    Wear slippers or shoes.
    Bake bread, or anything.
Move ( I usually accomplish this by chasing children, bathing children, holding children..) ;-)

Visit neighbors who foolishly keep their house too warm?

Toss some good sized throws around the room, one on every chair, so that no matter where you sit, you will have a cozy blanket to curl up into.

Fuzzy, wooly, cuddly socks and shoes or sneakers in the house (I have a clean pair I wear around the house only).

The smell of a rich, woodsy candle or incense. Sandalwood, patchouli, musk are all wonderful.

hot water bottles under blankets during the day if I'm sitting reading or on the computer or watching tv.

Dh's wool work socks over top my cotton ones.

    Wool sweaters, wool period.

Wear a hat indoors, and a scarf to cover the head and neck where we lose most of our heat in a chilly environment.

Long underwear (I have some thin knitted superwash wool ones with a lot of moth holes that dh doesn't use anymore-- we bought him another set for work). You wear ordinary underwear underneath, and launder as you would any clothing.
