I am so crabby with our electric co! They raised rates by almost double in the last year. We are being careful and its still climbing:

Our rates are nearly 15 cents a kilowatt...thought that we did pretty good getting the bill down to $108 this month from $144 last month.....only to see that the electric company didn't recieve our payment for last month! Soooo....we wound up having to pay again for the month before(money was still there in the checking...whew!) and this month...PLUS a nearly $8.00 late charge and other taxes and fees...total of $260 ......get this...we called our bank to see if they could do a "stop payment" for the check that was lost in the mail...oh, sure, they could do it, but they wanted $20! So, we had no choice but to let it ride. I can't believe it...that would have been a total of $28 just to cover someone else's mistake(the post office)......GGGRRR...had to rant....feel much better now

Which underlines the great thing about on-line banking! No postage, and it is usually pretty easy to prove that you sent your payment out on time. My bank has a policy that it will cover any late fees and penalties if it is at fault for a vendor not receiving my payment.

My electric bill was $277 last month. Have NO idea why. I live alone, and am gone most of the day. I didn't use the heat at all, except for a couple of days when I had company over. I *do* use the dishwasher and do laundry almost daily (lots of critters, so lots of food dishes and blankets to wash). And I'm on a well, which some people have told me can be really expensive, power-wise. But if the bill keeps creeping up (was about $240 the previous month), I'm going to be calling the power company out to do an audit of my usage. Maybe it is time to start saving up for those solar panels!!

I agree, you should call the power company. If it's only you and your never home, even doing laundry once a day shouldn't make your bill that high.

We have 4 of us at home right now and even though we dont wash clothes everyday our bill is roughly around $50-$125 and we use electric heaters, the dishwasher, laundry once a week, etc..

I would check on that and see if they are estimating or is it actual usage. JMO

My bill last month was $273.00
    This month $223.00 aprox .
I didn't do anything different that i know of other than cutting back on lights and using the wood stove during the day.
(have no choice as we're out of fuel oil and buy 5 gallons every 2 days to use furnace at night ) We can get it cheaper by the gallon buying it out of tanks than getting it delivered right now.
I do about 4 loads of wash per day between barn and school and work clothes plus regular every day washing
