    Default Lined curtains!

Want to lower your heating/cooling bill?

    Add curtains!

They should be lined. The amount of fabric should be at least twice the length of the horizontal width of the window.

Example: If your window is 60" wide, the width of curtain fabric should be at least 10' wide. At least.

    Other layers help.

Some homes come with venetian blinds. Leave 'em be. Add curtains overtop.

Keep blinds and curtains closed except for the times you are actually in the room.

Closing curtains will also save the colors of your furnishings - sofa and rugs especially.

I find this really helps. I added thermal lined drapes to all my windows when we moved in since the house had very old windows. They helped tremendously with the drafts. We got new windows installed last April and will not take down my thermal drapes!

I used to have lined draperies on most of my window and I can attest that they do indeed help. Great tip.

I made my own lined drapes by safety pinning pieces of flannel-backed tablecloth bought very inexpensively at a discount store.

When summer comes around I can take them off if i wish to by just un-pinning.

My first set I had sewn the FB material to the curtains. It worked but it was not removeable and they had puckers after I had washed them. That was when I came up with Safety pins!! A girls best friend!!
