what are electric rates in your area
What are electric rates in your area and your usage? Our electric bill is making me so mad!!!!! It keeps going up up up up!!!!
They put in a new meter on 3/2. Its digital. From 3/2 to 3/10 we used 286 kwh.
from 2/9 - 3/2 it said we used 873 For a total of 1158.
The previous bill was also for 29 days and we used 1096 kwh.
Or rate is .08310
I was so careful the last month to try to get this down and it was higher yet! Ugh!!!!~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

Just paid last bill and shreded the stub so I'll have to look at rate. Ours keeps going up for storm damage repair. Also fuel surcharges.
We are all very energy careful at our house. Windows, drapes and doors are opened to allow the breeze to flow throught and light to come in. Use of the heat and ac are very very limited.
People think we're nuts because we don't turn the ac on til about late July and then only when we go to bed and off it goes at 5am when DH gets up. Our bill runs anywhere from 90 to 100 dollars a month still too much for me.
Digital meters are coming to our area not to crazy about that idea.

This month it went down by $7.73, but I've been trying sooooo hard to make it go back down, I am soooo curious as to why it keeps staying high when our usual bills are between $45-$55 monthly.

rodmick - Mine are actually higher than yours! There is a non-fuel charge AND a fuel charge. If you use 1000 or less KWH, the rate is $.100720 when you add them together.
Our rates have gone up, up, up since the hurricanes blew through here in 2004 and continued in 2005.

Quiltermom~ sorry all I saw was the .05number and .05number
Ours says :
customer surcharge: 8.00
current other charger 9.94
energy charge at winter 872 kwh @ .080310
energy surcharge winter 286 kwh @ .80310
Why on earth do they make that bill look so complicated?????
I'm assuming that the 9.94 is our street light outside on the power pole in the back yard.
Ok folks here is what I am doing to cut the bills.
check timer on dryer after 15 min ~ I really have no where to line dry inside in the winter. Also the house already has moisture problems.
check the filter after each load
cut my hot baths down and shower instead
Keep harping on everyone to turn everything off. We do use those curly light bulbs.
Thats all I can think of at the moment. Any more ideas?~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

My rates are the same as Tracy's.
This month I used 659 kwh = $65.96 and that was with using 3 oil filled space heaters as needed to keep the furance off till bed time.
I am hoping to get it down to 50.00 next month, since I am not using the space heaters and recently switched to CF lightbulbs.
Tracy - Do you think your bill is high due to the econo heaters? Why dont you try to shut off and unplug everything and just leave your heaters on and go check your meter after an hour. Just a suggestion. Also have you cleaned the coils on your refrigerator? That might make a difference. If you are still stumped I would call PP&L every day and they can tell you how many khw you used for the day before. I did this when I started to use my electric heaters and it gave me an idea of how much it actually cost to use the heaters. If all else fails ask that they come out and check your meter, maybe something is wrong with it?

Here in central CA we pay:
(baseline) up to 390 Kwh @ $0.11430
(101-130%) next 117 Kwh@ $0.12989
(131-200%) the rest @ $0.21314
For us, that comes up to $80.24 for 603 Kwh before the extra taxes and fees, we use as little electricity as possible and our water heater and furnace are natural gas. The clothes dryer is electric but most everything gets air dried. Our baseline is set so low that we always go way over, it seems like it's set up that way...
We are down from last year/same month by 79 Kwh so I guess we are making a bit of progress.

While we are posting this. What are your best hints to keep it down?
Another thing......... I wonder if our well pump might be causing problems. I can hear it kick on almost everytime we turn a faucet on. I hadn't noticed that before.~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

Our well pump kicks on any time we turn on a faucet, flush the toilet, etc. BUT it goes right back off quickly. Is yours continuing to run. The only time ours runs and runs is when someone is showering or the washer is in use.
Utilize other methods of cooking instead of using the stovetop or oven if you can (a Nesco, toaster oven, bread machine, crockpot, etc.). Don't use the heated dry feature on the dishwasher. If you have an electric water heater, take shorter showers, wash loads of laundry in cold water if possible. Cook more than one thing in the oven at a time if possible (or if you have a convection oven take advantage of that feature and fill the racks full and then freeze what you've made).

Honestly, I don't know. Dh pays that bill. We don't use it for heating or anything like that, so we don't pay as much as some of you. Our highgest bills are in the summer when the pool pump is on.
However, I can tell you that some of my co-workers are constantly under threat of being shut off. Two of them owe Nat'l Grid something along the line of $1000. It is insane.
