Should I be embarrassed?
My husbands brother stopped by unexpected. We have put up plastic paint sheets to save on the electric bill. We have an apartment with a large faulted ceiling...we covered the opening with clear plastic, we also made a plastic curtain for the entry way and at the foot of the stairs. I must say it doesn't look real great, but it saves us a lot of money. We don't have a lot of company over, but I was a little embarrassed.

He then took him to see the upstairs...I had a load of laundry hanging in the spare bedroom.........

Absolutly not! Unless he's paying your bills your life style is your business. And even family should call before dropping by. Even if its just from up the street. What if you were in the bath!

Ummm, no! Believe me I've thought of doing that in my vaulted livingroom!

Thanks Laurie, I just hate when people drop by. This brother-in-law makes big bucks and probably wastes more in a day then I make in a week. He is moving to San Burnadino this next week, just felt a little strange...because I now he can't possible understand. Oh well, it's none of his bussiness !

better laundry hanging than sitting dirty on the floor in a pile ...better blocked off....than the house is FREEZING and uninviting....
my mom used to use bed sheets to cordon off the upstairs of the farm house when it was just the 2 of us in a 6 bedroom....it was the norm...if he says anything..tell him....to give you notice next time..

WOW! Can I ever relate to this! I have 4 sliding glass doors in my house, which includees the front door. The only "regular door" I have is from the garage to the house. Vaulted ceiling etc. I put plastic over every single door and window in the house. Our gas bill was supposed to TRIPLE this winter. Any time somone came to the house I had to motion for them to go to the garage door, wait for me to open it and invite them in. Did they think I was nuts? Of course, I don't care tho, because my gas bill was only $10 more per month this winter! TAKE THAT! LOL

Stand proud.
The best you can do for a visitor is to make them feel welcome. I'm sure you did that.

Awww, don't feel embarrassed, feel eccentric, lol! Every family need one, and if anyone says anything just tell them it works better than aluminum foil to keep the "alien rays" out!
Seriously, just let it slide, YOU know you're saving money and wanna bet that even though he's the "rich" one that you're happier and more financially stable?

No need to feel embarrassed. I'm sure you were gracious to him, even he did not call first.

I wouldn't let it bother you...I've got curtians up over all doorways down stairs. If I'd had enough plastic you can bet I would have used it!!

It'll make a good laugh in the summer time!
I think you're doing great... and maybe bil will adopt some of your frugal ways when he sees how much you've saved.
Good job! DOn't be embarassed. Be proud of your innovative ways!

I always wondered why everyone likes vaulted ceilings?? When we were looking for a house that was on our list of what we *didn't* want.....it just seems like wasted space and an energy nightmare!

Nope wouldn't feel embarrassed at all! I have a saying:
If you have come to see me, come one in!
If you have come to see my house, make an appointment!

I think I should tape that to the walls -- and make my children memorize it!
