Fluorescent bulbs v.s. regular bulbs?
Does changing to fluorescent bulbs in your lamp fixtures really save $$? I am wondering about your experiences.

I use them in my outdoor fixtures. I don't know if it really saves $$ (just got them recently) but they are supposed to last much longer.

Yes, they definitely save, last longer and are far better for the environment. The only thing is that you shouldn't put a globe around them. We've had ours now for almost a year and have not had to replace one.
When we got ours, Manitoba Hydro gave you 2 free if you bought 2 or more.

They definitely save. We don't have any lamps, but have recessed lights in our ceilings and use them there. You can get a great deal on 8 packs of them at Sam's.

Anyone with experience using them in outdoor settings in Canadian winters? We're thinking of replacing our front and back door and patio light with CF bulbs. They all currently have a covering (globe?) over the light. Any ideas how we could handle this in a heritage neighborhood? Those bare bulbs just ruin the look of the place, iykwim.

I was reading on ebay that they are not for outdoor use. Maybe it was just that particular brand though.

I've used them in outdoor fixtures for a few years now. I havne't had anytrouble with them, the only thing is that flourescents(sp?) take a little while to warm up, so on particularly cold days it might take a few minutes to warm up and actually get bright. I chose to put them outside though because outside lights are the ones (like basement lights) that tend to get left on by mistake.
ps: I'm in Northern BC

Thanks Babs! I think we'll try it. It sometimes gets down below -50C with the wind chill included here. And you're right. The outside lights do get left on by mistake. Especially when you have a 19 yo in the house who comes in after we go to bed!
