Default saving your heating oil during the summer

With the price of oil going up all the time, I found this to be a big help in conserving our heating oil.

First of all this is only for boiler systems ( furnace that also heats your water). Instead of leaving the furnace switch always on in the summer when you do not need to heat your home, just turn it on when you are planning to use the hot water.

We also heat with wood. So many days I would only need the furnace on to heat the water. The only time of the year we leave it on all the time is in the dead of winter.

Many times I plan all of my hot water actitities at the same time. Example:
Turn the furnace on in the morning to take showers, then I shut the switch off. There will still be hot water left in the boiler at this time, so I will start my load of white clothes ( my only hot water washing). I have a front loading washing machine that does not use alot of water. I also will hand wash the breakfast dishes with the left over hot water right away before it cools down again.

I hope this helps someone out there.

I recently started to shut off my switch. Last year we used approx 138 gallons of oil between March - September (that is without shutting off the furance). So it cost me approx $317 for hot water for 6 months!

Homekeepn - Do you know approx. how much you saved by flipping the switch? I'm just curious to see how much of a difference it will make for me!

    Thanks!

Banana- We probably saved about 150 gallons between March and September. That really adds up to ALOT of money. Right now oil is around $2.49 a gallon!

    Hope this helps.
