Default What is the warmest bedding?

We have no heat but what rises through the vents on the second floor of our house. All of the beds have electric blankets which work fine.
Since electric rates are going up again I'm wondering if maybe with different bedding if maybe we could warm the beds up with the electric blankets and then just shut the off for the night.

    Any ideas?

I use a down comforter and about 3 quilts on my bed. I also wrap a quilt around me totally, that acts as a coccoon to keep the body heat on me.

We have heated mattress pads. I like them much better than the electric blankets. Our blankets are always getting twisted & turned. Plus I'm afraid of the kids strangling (I know, I'm a worry wart) on the cord. With the heated mattress pad at least it's stationary. Mine & Dh's have dual controls, so I can crank mine up and he can have his on low

This will be the first year in a long time that we will have insulation in our BR. Up till now, the room has been cool, so I used flannel sheets, and two heavy fleece balnkets on top. If it's really cold I will put a lighter fllece blanket on top of my sheet and sleep sandwiched inbetween the fleece layers. It has worked very well.

    What great ideas! Thank you!!!
I had thought about the heated mattress pads but hesitate because of the cost to buy them. Do they use about the same electricity as the blankets?

Now layers of fleece sounds cozy.

As far as down comforters how do you know which is a good one?

We use a down comforter, flannel sheets, and a couple heavy blankets. As for knowing a good down comforter, look for one that has the down sewn in squares. It sould have a kind of patchwork quilt look. Otherwise the down will all shift to one side.

We don't use them currently, but have always used down comforters in the past when it was an issue. I think my mom got ours for $30 on clearance from Bradlees - nothing too expensive since we were kids at the time - and they never wore out (and are still hanging around my parents' house, as far as I know).

I'm not sure about the electricity usage of heated mattress pads vs. the electric blankets. This is the one we have:

The kids' aren't nearly as fancy (dual controls & such).

I use thick flannel sheets and a down comforter. You can also find in the store now the polyester blend blankets, similar to fleece, but softer. I bet these blankets would help. Also, wool is always warm, it's just picky. I wouldn't put it close to my skin.

I also use Vornado space heaters in my room to warm it up.

Another vote for the heated mattress pads.

I am cold when I crawl into bed, so I set mine to "High" while I'm cleaning up before bed. I read for a few minutes, then I turn mine off for the night.

DH is warmer at the start, so he just sets his to level 2 for the whole night.

On top of the sheets, we have a down comforter, a 'mink' blanket, and an extra comforter for DH.

First of all put a good layer of newspaper between the mattress and box spring. That will help with the cold seeping through the bottom.

We just use flannel sheets, a velux (sp?) blanket and a comforter. Plenty for us 2 as hubby is a human furnace and with my hot flashes I sometimes only use the top sheet!

over your mattress put a nice thick blanket then your sheets, you wouldnt believe the difference it makes...and lots and lots of layers.....in the winter we have sheets, 2 old blankets that are woven, a knit afghan and then the comforter....we rarely turn heat on in out room...

my kids are furnaces but i put sheets, fleece blankets (2) and comforter...if really cold, (its gets like -45 at night) i'll throw another comforter on...

We got rid of the electric blanket. We use flannels sheets , fleece blankets & quilts. Also, when it is really cold, I heat up several rice bags in the microwave to put in the bed or directly on feet or back.
Heated meattress pads are a better idea than the electric blankets.
