CALL YOUR PROVIDER AND ASK FOR DISCOUNTS!
So my husband and I use Mediacom for our digital cable and high speed internet. We've been with them for about 2 years and they hooked us with a good 18 month promotional rate. Since the promotional rate has dropped off and our bill has shot up. For the modem, high speed internet, cable, and one movie package our bill is roughly 100$ a month. With taxes etc. it jumps up to around 109. If we rented the movies at 3.99 a pop, it jumped up even higher.
Well about the time the promotional rate dropped off I called and asked what they could do to keep me. They gave me a 5 dollar discount. Not the best but not bad.
Well fast forward to now, Mediacom is having this huge legal fiasco and may lose the rights to provide us with some channels. So DirectTv is making a killing off people switching over to them by offering the same cable pack we have and high speed internet for around 80 a month for the first year.
I called Mediacom, explained how much I liked their services, that we had been good customers, never missed a payment or had a slow pay, but unless they could discount our services we would be forced to drop their product.
So they are giving me a discount. It used to cost me 47.95 for cable, 42.95 for internet and 5.95 for Starz and 3.00 for modem. Now it will be costing me 3.00 for modem, 47.95 for cable and 15.00 for Starz and Internet! That is saving me like 30 dollars a month!!!!!
Moral to the story: DO not be afraid to call and ask for what you want. Worst they can tell you is no. Then you just call again tomorrow and ask somebody else.McD

That is a very good idea! I don't always think to do it but it usually pays off when you make the call.

I did this with our local cable company, Comcast, too. It would run around $100-115 a month w/o our discount. Now I pay $87 for cable internet, digital cable, HBO and Starz. To me, it never hurts to ask.
