Save Money by Dressing Up for Winter
In the movies, we see folks wearing all sorts of clothing that has become out of fashion. Murder mysteries include one of the men wearing a smoking jacket inside the mansion. I have not seen anyone wear a smoking jacket in ages. But, it has been a while since I went to a dinner party at a drafty old mansion.
People used to wear a vest with the rest of their clothes. Men wore a vest under a suit jacket to add another layer of warmth. Women used to wear a vest, in a contrasting color, to make a fashion statement and stay warm.
Sweater vests were a popular item. You hardly ever see a cardigan sweater like Mister Rogers used to wear on his children’s TV show.
As the high cost of energy forces us to push our thermostats down it is time to revive some old fashion warm fashions.
My wife wears her sheepskin slippers, with the fur side inside, around the house all winter. She has made herself a set of vests so she can change to a different one every week. She is still thin and beautiful so she feels the cold more than I do.
I have a woolen shirt jacket that I wear when the house cools down. It is almost like wearing a security blanket, familiar and warm.
What do you wear to keep warm when the Grinch turns the thermostat lower?

well I always have slippers and extra vests for the whole family. I love my big comfy sweaters and flannel sheets for the bed and flannel for the pjs too.
I try to have 3 layers of clothing in the winter. Undershirt or tshirt, sweater and vests.

I our house the rule is to cover up.. If your feet are cold put the socks and slippers on, if you are cold, grab that sweat shirt/ hoodie... In bed, I try to make sure all the kids are wearing climate appropriate clothing, even if it is just a tshirt and shorts. If putting more clothes on doesn't help, the kids each have two or three fleece blankets each they can get an use in the different areas of the house. I would much rather get me warm than heat up the house and feel stuffy and continualy watch the bill go UP....

~Socks, slippers and a sweatshirt. The real trick, I think, is to keep moving. There are usually enough chores to keep me up and about. Also, non-clothes related, I used to prepare a pot of tea or coffee and pour it into a carafe so I'd have hot drinks all day. Mine broke but I'll replace it when I see a good deal. Soup going in the crockpot works well, too, you can warm yourself up with a little snack when you're feeling chilled.~

We love blankets in out house. We have more blankets than I know what to do with some days. My kids are forever making blanket beds on the floor and cuddling up.

I just went out and got a bunch of blanet sleepers for my little one who is too active for a blanket to do the trick. I got them a bit big so she can wear reg. pjs under them if it's really cold.

Cardigan sweaters are a favorite when the weather turns cool. Of course, the new style with tighter sleeves can be difficult when layering! Couldn't get through the winter without thick socks & my slippers. Plus I always have a throw on the sofa when I watching TV or reading. I find these help me keep my heating bill under control!

Remember the jeans that had the flannel lining. I had a pair when I was little. I went to e-bay the other day and they were about $30. Not a lot of money but more then I want to spend. Maybe I can make it.

I always have a sweater or vest on. I sleep in a hoodie from about September until June - the person next to me isn't cold, so more blankets doesn't work, plus I can't sleep if there is too much weight on me. I have a wool blanket and a baby (now lap) quilt in the living room to put over me while watching tv.
Blankets and sweaters are easier for me than turning up the heat because, 1) I'm usually the only one cold and 2) I'm cold one minute and hot the next, so my sweater is off and on all day and night.
I also bake & roast a lot in the winter, which helps to keep the house warm, and I work on my giant quilt in the evening which is pretty hot work.

We've learned to layer, too! My boys wear undershirts and jersey-lined pants or fleece sweatpants. I also bought them longer underwear - not longjohns, but longer jersey boxer-briefs instead of little boy briefs. For bed they keep on the undershirt and wear blanket sleepers with feet. I wear layers, throwing a fleece zip-up sweatjacket over pretty much anything, and I go to bed in flannel pants, a long john shirt (sometimes with an extra t-shirt over top) and socks. We have baskets of extra throw blankets in the living room and rec room, and extra blankets folded at the foot of the boys' beds. But... I have found that the biggest difference, though, is putting on slippers or 'houseshoes' to wear all day long; we have hardwoods and ceramic in most of our house, and this makes a HUGE difference!

I wear a fleece robe all day every day in the house! Also, wool socks and my husband's thermal shirt under a shirt. Hot tea is great and a blanket on the couch to throw on while vegging out!

we layer and have blankets on almost every chair in the house so if we get cold we just grab a blanket and put our slippers on and sweatshirts orsomething. this year granted we live in Minnesota we want to see if we can keep our thermostat at 73 and NOT completely freeze ALL winter.

I double up on my socks, use cuddle duds, turtleneck and a sweatshirt. If I get really cold I wear a hat,it really takes the chill off. I like to keep the temp at 62-63,we live in Wisconsin but the kids are learning not to complain.
