55 degrees at night to low?
Is setting you heater at 55 degrees at night to low. I live on a second floor apartment and am trying to save on utilities. The heater is out on the balcony in an uninsulated closet. It is gas. Don't want anything freezing. Yes I know things have to be 32 degrees to freeze. Just want to be sure that everything will work ok.
Thanks in advance.

Ya, should be okay, we set ours at that or lower when we travel and havn't had problems. Also, our temp in the house lately has dropped to about that at night when I don't feed the wood burner before bed. Just bundle up!

55 is not too low.
I was wondering about your heater--could you add pieces of plywood to the sides of the closet that are exposed to the outside? Would that help it be more efficient?

Well it has one of those yellow energy efficiency labels on it. Apparently it is not efficient. It probably would help to insulate the closet. Out of which it would come out of my pocket.
But thanks for your replies. Wasn't sure if there was something else I needed to know.
Yes I do bundle up. Down comforter and featherbed plus comforter and blanket.

I don't think it's tooooo cold. We're in Michigan and the roomie has yet to put the heat on once so far this season. We just grab an extra blanket and wear socks/slippers all the time. I actually sleep better when it's colder than when it's hotter.

I don't think it's too cold...we purposely leave our thermostat as low as possible...and often leave the window open an inch or two...Dh and I both like it cold.

I keep mine on 55 most of the time. I'd still try to insulate the closet some, possibly with something I could take with me or old quilts or something.

I would probably be frozen, but I'm used to hot weather. It should be fine!

If you live on the second floor, the heat from the first should come up to yours. At least that has always been my experience. We never had to turn our temp up at all during winter because the people below us would heat our apt! lol It's a shame we bought the house and don't have free heat from underneath!

That's fine for us but we have two wool blankets plus quilt on the bed and we both wear wool socks to bed.

I keep my thermostat set at 58 during the winter. When it starts getting in the teens, the heater runs a lot more often, which radiates more heat from the duct work. This keeps the crawlspace above freezing, probably in the 40s or even 50s.
My mom is buying me a Slanket for Christmas. A Blanket with Sleeves. Which will be very nice.

I think one significant factor in being able to comfortably drop your thermostat is dressing (and dressing your bed) for the temp you set. Colder requires more or thicker clothes and blankets. It really is that simple. If I slept in chemises instead of sweats, I'm sure I'd spend more on heating!

Well thanks everyone for you replies. I wish I could say the downstairs tenants heats my place but I can't. I hear him running around stating he is cold. Yes, my apartment shakes while he does this. I think he is in his 50's. The couple downstairs needless to say is very odd. I understand running around but literally it feels like an earthquake is going on. He sounds like a spasmatic child running around. Well I better stop because I could just keep on going.
I will think about what I can do in the closet outside.

I saw this kid on CNBC a few months ago.... a college kid in Maine that didn't want his hands to get cold when he changed the tv channel with he remote so he had his mom sew the sleeves when he was home from college last X-mas break. Now he's making millions. Love it! (love the idea too!)
