Not feeling very frugal
I got up this morning to my Dh telling me that when he got up and came out to the kitchen the front door was open and the furnace was running.
Of course the furnace is always running at that time of day, but I swore that door was closed and locked last night before I went to bed. We have had trouble with this door in the past. So tonight I went to Lowes and bought a security latch for the door, because I don't ever want to have that happen again. I am just waiting to see how bad the gas bill will after all the crazy weather this winter, and now the front door fiasco. I could have screamed!

Oooh! I hate stuff like that. Last week I realized I had left my little space heater on in the basement all night. Yikes! It is safe as far as fire is concerned but not so great for my electric bill. Ay yi yi.
Good idea about the security latch - that should keep it from happening again. I hope your bill is not too bad!

we had some pretty bad storms earlier this week and the front door blew open with the wind b/c the wall on the right side of the door is warped. this place has so many problems with it that my mom doesnt have the money to fix it and thats part of the reason i cant wait to move in with jason next week.

I wouldn't worry too much. One time a friend of mine left the house for a week and left some jeans in the dryer with it running. When she came home the dryer was still running (thankfully no fire) and she freaked out. Her bill was like $5 more for the month. (that was back in the good ol' days of cheaper fuel though too)

I'm really trying to save money on water, and I've had it where I found the toilet running hours after it was last flushed! (you know, where you have to jiggle the handle to get it to stop). So frustrating, as the conservation measures of a month are wiped out like that. But a good opportunity to be more vigilant etc.

That happened to me twice. And I live alone! We have terrible winds here and apparently my new place doesn't have great doors. Luckily I had pillows infront of the door both times, so it didn't open all the way. Since then, DBF has fixed the latch and as long as I make sure to hear the "click", the door stays shut.

Thanks for all your support. It's nice to know I am not the only one with a finicky door. The worst of it is that this happened in warmer weather, so to speak. We are up for another arctic blast this weekend and that is usually when we have the most trouble with the darned thing.

I actually left town once and left my front door standing wide open. Since it was summer, I din't have a fuel expense, but arrived home to a rather scathing letter from the police - something along the line of "It's a good thing your head is attached...."

And I gotta watch those kids, dd especially. She loves to turn on the gas fireplace and leave the room (or, the house.... ) or turn up the thermostat (she wears tiny little shirts, no socks, etc all year long and we live north) and it drives me crazy that I'm having to constantly follow people around to turn things off. Sometimes I don't and then I'm upset about the waste of energy. Sigh.

My dd likes to go barefoot and t-shirts all year round and when she complains about being cold I tell her that's what the warmer clothes are for. She doesn't usually complain too much. LOL
