I used to work at suburban energy and they really pushed these. supposedly they save quite a bit of energy and you can fit them in a very small area. you have hot water instantly with 0 storage. they are expensive but incredibly efficient.

I LOVE mine!!!! It made a huge difference in my gas bill. I think I am on the high end of saving 35% or more. It does take a little longer for the hot water to flow. I have to run maybe an extra 1/2 gallon of water. I usually fill up watering containers while I wait for the water to heat up. Also, get used to using cold water for hand rinsing. You don't want to fire up the unit if your going to cut off the water before it gets hot. Its nice to not worry about running out of hot water when you have company. It was one of the best decisions I made, and I will never have a tank again.
I have Rannai. The largest home model for 4baths.
edited to add: The unit will pay for itself in three years, and then the rest will be gravy!!!!

We are also going to switch over to a tankless hot water heater the first chance we get. The reason they save money is that they are strictly on demand type systems...so you aren't using fuel/electricity to keep the water at 120 degrees or on whatever temp you have your hot water heater set at.

glad to know it is worth it... It is high on my list of improvements . My reason was as a family childcare I have to keep the water between 110 and 120 so it is not hot enough for dishes and my bath
I almost wish ours would break so we could go tankless sooner.Meg

Just be careful. My SIS and BIL got one and it almost burnt their house down.
It just melted inside and smoldered. They smelt something weird.

If you can hang it on an exterior wall, installation will be cheaper b/c you wont have to pay for venting.
Some models sell optional controls for each water source so if you need a certain faucet to run cooler (as for a daycare) and another to run hotter (dishwasher) you can set them differently.
My unit will pay for itself in three years. Waiting five years for your current tank to quit is not saving you $. It is a big expense upfront, but well worth it. Also factor in that age of traditional tanks makes them even more in-efficient as time goes by. It is a shame that this wonderful way to save money is so dad-gum expensive up front!!! While you are saving, shop around and talk to your utility co. They can possible offer a better deal, and they sometimes have restrictions due to liability. Because I had been a customer for soo long, they gave me a break on installation costs. They will also service it, and any part of my gas line system. Just other factors to consider. HTH

Absolutly, we are just wating on our rebate check to come and then we will be getting one... I also heard that if you buy one you get a $300 tax credit for it. Not sure how that works but I'm sure I will find out.....

We were looking into them. Unfortunately they stopped the $300 tax credit.
