We have a whole house filter in the basement by the incoming line and it makes a big difference. I'm not sure how well the Pur things work.

Pur thing works fine for me. We have the one that mounts on the faucet and the water is fine from the filter but tastes even better when cold. We are glad we bought one.
We've had the filtering pitchers in the past and find the faucet mount handier.
I suppose water specialists would possibly prefer bottled but it's good enough for us here. Makes a big improvement over what comes out of our faucet without it.
Cost wise, we change the filter cartridge when the indicator shows that we need to and that ends up being every 4 mo? We think it's a better buy than all those bottles.
We buy the filters at a wholesale club and get a pretty good price on them. Keep an eye out for coupons too.

we use the pur on the faucet too. we also fill a gallon container and leave it in the fridge. Our filter lasts about 4 months too. I buy bottles and make the kids refill theirs during the day, and most of the time they have their own sports bottle they keep in the fridge. Trying to save the bottles for when we have to take with us.

We have a Brita water filtering pitcher. Original cost was 19.99. It will last a lifetime. Filters are 6/21.99 - these will last 1 year. You change every 2 months. It gives us great tasting water. We pour in individual bottles, keep a gallon milk jug full in frig., use for ice cubes, and cook with it.
There is no way I would spend the money for bottled water or ice, when I can make my own so cheap. It tastes really clean and fresh.

We live in the country and have our own well. It's hard water.
We made the decision over a year ago, to put a PUR on our kitchen sink.
Not sure how often we change the filter, but we wait till the red part shows full, and it won't put anymore water through it.
We normally use the water filtered, for drinking water, cooking water, and to make coffee. If doing the dishes, I just tip the PUR back and just use the water straight as it comes from the well. So this prolongs the life of the filter.
We do buy some bottled water from Aldi's and these we use in his lunch boxes.

I'm like POOTERSMOMMY in that I use Brita filters and two large pitchers that are kept full to use for everything. Actually my tap water is quite good tasting but my old galvanized pipes give me nice particles, which I prefer to filter out. Old men don't need the Iron.
I pour into individual bottles and keep several in the frig for when I'm on the road and I usually add a spritze of lemon for flavor. At home I will use the packets of flavors made for bottled water when I can get them for less than $2/box.
I find most bottled water a waste of money and definitely not green friendly.

I do drink my tap water and refill my water bottles. I also have a 2 gallon Brita system that stays in my fridge. (wedding gift ---actually the best gift! 14 years and we couldn't live without it!) We have sports bottles we fill up and keep in the fridge for grab-n-go to karate, baseball, football, biking.....
I purchased a 24 pack of bottled water on sale last August for 2.99 and we still have half a case! (I have it written in my price book) the same day I purchased an 8 pack of paper towels and we still have 3 new and 1 just put on the rack left.Wife to DH

I never got in to the water bottle craze until I realized that there was white residue on my dishpan liner and got to thinking. So now I have a brita pitcher. Would have gotten pur but couldn't find one around here. Anyway, really do like the idea of drinking "healthier" water. And I can really tell the difference when making tea. I look at it now as being an investment in my health. Since I rent I bought the pitcher. Didn't want to be blamed if something went wrong with plumbing.

We like bottled water here. We have always had well water that is not very safe to drink so we have been drinking bottled for years. We are concerned about the environment so we have a low energy water cooler and we own 3 five gallon bottles. We fill those up at the grocery store (which is really just filtered tap). That way it's always cold, less waste, and even my 3 year old can get a glass when she's thirsty. We only pay 37 cents a gallon.
