Electric Bill Calculator
In todays local newspaper was an article about electric usage. Included in the article was this website that allows you to calculate/estimate your monthly electric bill. I thought this was a very cool idea! It shocked me when I learned that my celings fans cost so much to run! :surprise: Guess we wont be using those much this year! Hope this is helpful to you!

You can also purchase this item on amazon. You can then measure up which appliances are energy hungry.

Are they assuming the lights are on while the fan is going? I'd assume that is what they are calculating.
I don't know how much I'd trust that. I plugged in my numbers here, and they had me at 4x my actual consumption. I compared it to my bill just received.

Here's an energy audit. It's based on your bills, and $ you pay.
It makes alot of sense. I noticed, some patterns in doing it.
I found out that I was using up to 6kJ of natural gas last year this time, and I'm under 2 this year! WOOHOO! That's 66% less!

they are 'generalizing' your appliances...to get a true reading you need to look at the wattage on each individual item... then they don't take into account 'your' habits... my actual's are NO WHERE near what they are listing from the coffee pot to the refrigerator....
someone suggested that they were turning off their ceiling fans coz they are costing too much...my ceiling fans are 95w....they use .1 kw per hr....at our current cost of electricity (9.98 cents a kw...say 10....) that's less than a penny an hour....(now that is fan...not 4-60w lightbulbs) the fan is a GOOD thing...it 'stratify's '(sp?) the heat up against the ceiling (meaning it PUSHs it down against the walls and to the floor...which in turn keeps your house warmer which in turn keeps the furnace from kicking on and the blower not in use (which by the way uses .2kw every 15 mins on)...
they also are not taking into account how much 'you' pay for your electricity in your area...it can vary widely...i have heard its dirt cheap in places like Utah (6.9 cents or something like that) and in california its like 13 cents a kw hour....
so in essence there is no way they can give you anywhere near 'accurate' ideas of your bill... about the only thing it is good for is to show you that your refrigerator USES more electricity than a lightbulb....which hopefully you have figured out by yourself by now...
check out this site
http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/howmuch.html
this lets you plug in your individual item (they don't have EVERYTHING listed so when you check your wattage pick an item close to what they have) you can then put in your electric cost per hr (check your last bill)...and then you can plug in time from 1 min to 24 hrs depending on how long YOU use an individual item...
i went thru all the items we use in my own house and posted them on the thread 'I'm taking down the tent'... if you are curious about how much things have been costing electric wise....
i am making an active and concentrated effort to get my bills under control and know exactly where that usage went each day....
