Where are you going?
I would compare costs at www.sidestep or www.kayak.com
You could also try www.expedia.com or www.orbitz.com
When I am looking to reserve a room, I research online and then call the hotel directly to see who can give me the best deal.

I use the same sites as Michelle, but I also use tripadvisor.com. Tripadvisor gives reviews from other travelers who have previously stayed in a hotel you are thinking of staying.
After reviewing all the hotels in the area, prices, and reviews, I book directly through the hotel chain online. I have never had a problem. Just make sure you get a confirmation number. I usually call the day before we leave to confirm the reservation.~*Michelle*~

If you're looking for a Holiday Inn go somewhere like Expedia and search for hotels in the city you'll be in....narrow it down to the Holiday Inn nearest where you want to stay....find the number there and call it
or google Holiday Inn and call the 1-800 number listed.

Phone book? Directory Assistance?
Yellowpages.com http://www.yellowpages.com/
Or, If you're talking about a chain hotel, then I would look it up online. For example, if I wanted to stay at the Marriott in Newport RI, I would search for it on their site.

I've had good luck with priceline. I go to bidding for travel.com and do my research first. They only thing is you don't know for sure what hotel you will get and you can't cancel. I've got some good prices by using them.
