Live in New York State?
A question for those of you who live in NY state.
How far are you from NY city and how often do you take a trip there?
If you do venture into the city why do you go? ( shopping/Theatre friends/other?).
Yes, I am nosy
I am curious as to how big a draw the place is to those who live closest to it.
Given that it attracts tourists from all over the world all year round, I wondered what the (relative) locals think?

i live in NJ not NY but alot of people i know go there for the theater and some for the shopping ( and the street shopping knock offs etc not reg shopping )
we went last year with the family took a bus up and back for a day - we did the empire state building walked thru times square some of the different shops etc to be honest i am not a city gal ....i dont like the smells the noise the rushing pushing and un personalization of it all- if i am walking - i like to say a polite helllo to people smile etc - which doesnt seem to happen in big cities- i am not a fan of going into philly either for same reason - . if i am going to a specific place in philly say the franklin institute as i did last week before my membership expired - i go where i am going - i dont really walk just to walk .
if i went to NY again other than theater it would be for central park
my single cousin lives in NY goes to the city alot for the socialization - bars etc .*~Debbi~*

I live in NJ,southern Jersey. I go to NYC for the theater and sometimes to shop. We always go on sponsered bus trips. The school I worked at a few years ago does a trip in May and Oct(?). I have done the May one several times. Not interested in the fall one because it gets dark earlier. That's just my personal feeling.
I don't go to Phila because I don't like to drive in the city.Years ago MIL and I would take the bus there and shop for the day. All the old dept stores are gone now so that is out. We now only go there for special events.

I live in northern NJ, about 30 minutes outside of the city. I go into NYC a few times a year. Often for theater, but sometimes just to walk through the city (I LOVE the city), window shop, eat at fantastic restaurants, do the SkyWalk across the city, walk through Central Park, etc. There is so much to do in the city...I try to take advantage of it.

ssindi- depending on where you live and where you are going you can park in NJ and take the patco speedline into the city- my older kids do this alot for concerts and phillies games- at night if its a special event its not as dangerous because so many are doing it with you .

It's about 177 miles from me and I've been there once. I'm just not a big fan of cities for the most part but do like visiting cities like Boston and Philly for the history aspect.

I have lived in NY State all my life. I have been to NYC once and drove though one other time. I'd much rather go to Niagara Falls, Ontario as a touristy visit than NYC.
I might go once more this coming year, but this would be related to a work trip for my wife.

There are a few things I want to see in NYC. Mainly they are Cental Park,Grand Central Station and the Statue of Liberty. I know the last one is not really NYC however I have only seen it from the window of a moving vehicle.
Just went to Niagara Falls last week so will move that to the bottom of my return to list.
We tried the hi-speed line to philly quite awhile ago and got lost trying to find our way home. I am not too interested in history at all. I did want to go to South Street but there has been so much trouble there lately, I may rethink. My brothers like to go to Chinatown now and again. Maybe they will take big sister one day.

I'm almost as far West in the state as a body can get. Been there once on a bus...90 minute layover...stayed in the station. I have absolutely no inclination to go there and wish they would secede from the state.

I don't live in NY and never had any interest in going there. Last year I came across an old friend on facebook and found out she lives in NY. My daughters got to know her on FB also and wanted to meet her, so the 3 of us took a trip there.. The girls and I did all the tourist things, while she worked..
I suggest you don't go to NYC, etc. unless you are with someone that knows it.. Not the most pleasant place to get lost in.. We even wound up in Harlem at one point. We did the subway and all I can say is ick!!
