Warm clothes and comfy shoes. Don't be fooled by the temp in the town where your staying. The city's temp is almost always different then NJ. You might think it's freezing in Jersey and then warm in NYC or vise versa. Also check ahead of time on bed bug issues. Make sure that none of the places you want to go are closed because of bugs.

Have a wonderful time! What a great time of year to see NYC! I agree with others that you may want to consider taking the PATH trains into Manhattan -- you can get out at the Herald Square station, near the Empire State Building and Macy's, which should be decked out for the Christmas holidays.
As a native New Yorker, my advice to you is to remember that New York is not so much a place to be seen as a place to be experienced. Try to see a Broadway play. Go to a sporting event at Madison Square Garden, or a concert at Carnegie Hall. See if you can catch the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center. Take a horse-drawn cab ride through Central Park. Eat in one of the more famous restaurants. Look up your immigrant ancestors in the records at the Ellis Island museum. And don't forget to try the pizza!

Also -- The Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center is on November 30 this year. See if you can go ice skating there. Also, the Radio City Music Hall Christmas pageant should be in full swing by Thanksgiving. If you want to go to it, you should look into getting tickets now. Cheers!
