Hubby and I ride motorcycles. I bought a book (used) on motorcycle day trips in and around our area. We pull it out from time to time and find new destinations.

We have three dogs and lost our pet sitter so overnight trips aren't possible at this time. So we research local destinations and ride. Hubby is off Friday through Sunday; so we often get out and ride places on Friday.

MM, I have to say that it would be one incredible staycation where you live! I've been reading the posts in this thread -- I live in such a rural, boring area with absolutely no attractions nearby and my husband never wants to travel anywhere :-D. How I would love to travel! Okay. I'm done whining, I guess.

You are so right Pemberleyan about my blessings here and I don't take them for granted.

We live on a lake, so staying home means we do what a lot of people come here and spend big bucks to do, spend time in a cabin on the lake. We are, in fact, on vacation this week, although we have been working through this one, building a garden for the most part and catching up on work that got neglected in favor of our numerous vacations last year.
Pretty much exact same for us. We are in the heart of the forest, and although we are a fair distance away from any "family-oriented tourist attractions", we get a lot of the eco-tourist as well as the all-out hunting and fishing lodge crowd (ie BIG BUCKS). We also have an island cabin on the lake that is around 25 miles away from our front door, but a whole 'nother world away. We are entirely surrounded by unihabited crown land, so finding a place to go camping with the family is literally as easy as throwing a dart at a map on the wall. We're big into the outdoors, NOT designed for tourism stuff, though.

Camping to me is finding a level, semi-cleared spot by the river to pull the canoe up to, knocking down the underbrush to set up the tent, finding deadfall trees to cut up as firewood and pulling supper out of the river. I will tolerate "camping" where you have to go to an office and they tell you to set up by a numbered post and purchase bundles of pre-cut firewood, but it's really not the same.

Oh, I forgot to say, MM, that I hope you have a wonderful staycation!! Coincidentally, one of the few places to which I have traveled is Maui. Have a great time off work!

The last few years I have always stayed home by preference. To make it really a vacation, I try to get ALL the housework done by the day before and cook ahead so that while I am off work I have only the most minimal of household chores - and believe me, I eat off disposable for those days when I can!

I can entertain myself endlessly with books, audiobooks, crochet, jigsaw puzzles, and the computer, so finding something to do is never a problem. And I'm with Russ - the alarm is off! They become just lazy days with no time constraints and as little stuff to that I "ought" to do as possible.

We're lazy and we like our creature comforts, so we like more developed campgrounds. We'll dry camp, but haven't tried boondocking yet. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, near which we live, is all canoe camping. No motorized means of transportation is allowed in its million acres of wilderness. There are no roads or anything there. People flock there by the millions each year. We're not diehards, so we go where we can take our pop up camper. Say what you will, but when the temp starts dropping at night, there's nothing like sliding into a bunk pre-heated with our electric heated mattress pads! Aaaaaahhhhhh! Pure bliss! We try to camp spring and fall when there are fewer people in the campgrounds.

Traffic in town is picking up already, so we're looking forward to fall. Is it Labor Day yet? Summer is the time we spend as little time in town as possible.

Well, my massage is set up for Monday at 2PM. Cannot wait!! Need to decide what books I am going to read by the pool. Also need to see if there are coupons or specials for any restaurants so we can enjoy those too. I am so enjoying planning this!!
