What are the MUST do in Saint John, NB????
A bunch of us are taking a cruise to Canada and one of the port calls is Saint John, NB.
The ships excursions offerings are a bit... boring. Does anyone know what the REAL to-do/must-see things in Saint John are?????

George St. is almost a must. It's an entire street of all different kinds of bars, from small micro-pubs to big establishments. Even if you're not a big drinker, it's an amazing atmosphere. Never been there, but a friend of mine grew up in St Johns, and a lot of friends have been there to play hockey. All said it was an amazing experience.

How long is the port call - a few hours or an overnight? That makes a world of difference

What are the excursion options? Saint John is on the Bay of Fundy, but they are near the mouth so it may not be quite as incredible as it is deeper in. Bay of Fundy is awesome, but i don't know that side very well. Still, I would look for excursions that involve exploring the Bay or going to the Reversing Falls (spot where the river meets the tide and the water flows up). Dh couldn't think of anything exciting in the city itself, but says they have jet boating on the river. If they go boating on the tidal bore that can be a pretty wild ride. Apparently they also have a great market, but it's fresh food and that's no good on a cruise.
Where else does this cruise go?

The excursions are mostly focused around the Bay of Fundy, covered bridges, trolleys around downtown, and a pub crawl.
One of the couples that is going has been to St. John and say the excursions are really REALLY boring, and suggested we save the money and just find something ourselves because we will be docked a 15 minute walk from downtown.
The second port of call is in Halifax, NS -- we want to go to Fairview Cemetery, so we'll grab the excursion that will bring us to Peggy's Cove.

The market in Saint John is actually worth going to. In addition to the food stalls, there's lots of little shops to see as well.
If you find a tourist information place (I'm sure there's one right around there), there is a self-guided walking tour around the historic district, which is quite interesting if you like old buildings. There's also an old cemetery there, too.
You'll definitely enjoy Halifax! We went to Fairview Cemetery to visit the Titanic graves. Peggy's Cove is amazing too!
Have a great trip!~Tracy~

I have been on this cruise. We went to Peggy's Cove in Halifax and at St. John's we took the shuttle tour. I was interested in the history of St. John so we took the shuttle stopped at the museum there in the mall, went to the Bay of Fundy, and to an old fort.
The tour guide on the shuttle was informative and we did learn the history of St. John.
Nothing at the fort but there was a nice view.
Bay of Fundy the tide was not with us and we just looked and left. I did see the boat ride while we were there and was a little sorry that we had not booked it.
The museum was nice but the artifacts there were not as old as I would have liked. (late 1700's) The curator there was outstanding and offered to give us a private viewing of military artifacts on our next visit that are related to our family's history.
Not all that exciting but our day was full and the weather was nice. Over all we had a good time.
Enjoy your cruise.
