canadian ladies ... help!
I wonder if any of the canadian ladies here can help.
My son who is a chef intends to travel to Canada in June. He wants to go on a working holiday and be based in toronto when he first gets there. His aim is to work there and take weekend trips to New York and Boston as well as other places in canada. After he's been in toronto for a few months he wants to go to Whistler or a place like that.
My questions: is there an internet site that advertises jobs for visitors? We know he'll have to get a visa and that it is valid for 12 months.
Are there any tourist areas in or around Toronto?
What's the cost of living like there?
If you could give me any other info I'd be very grateful. DS went to london last year and was bashed and robbed while he was there. I hope he'll be safer in Canada. We're trying to arrange as much as we can before he leaves so we know where he'll be and that he's reasonably safe.

The cost of living is very high in Toronto and the rent is outrageous!!!

If he is looking for a tourist area I would pick Calgary instead. Check out the Banff area and he'd find a job in no time.

thanks so much, cj. I'll tell him when he wakes up.
I looked at that site and a few of the jobs asked for chefs that specialise in Canadian cuisine. Can you tell me what kind of food canadians eat when they go to a mainstream restuarant?

Rhonda, I also suggest, somewhere like Banff or Jasper. Toronto is hugely expensive.
I could also suggest Ottawa
We have a huge tourist industry, lots of hotels and restaurants, cost of living is cheaper than Toronto.

thanks chriss. I want him to get a job where he has accommodation attached. I think he'll only get that if he works at a resort out in the sticks somewhere.
What kind of food do you canadians eat. Are you meat, chicken and fish eaters? Do you know a good canadaian food site I can show him with canadaian recipes?

Rhonda, I'm not really too sure what they mean by Canadian Cuisine. There is such a wide variety of cuisine here. Beef is of course big, despite the Mad Cow crisis. Ethnic food is also quite popular as we are a very diverse population.
Here is a link for Jasper Park Lodge. It's in Alberta (I worked there many years ago and loved it)

thanks chriss, it looks like a lovely place. Does + grats mean plus tips?
We're not having much luck finding chef's jobs on those big employment sites. My guess is we might need to check out the individual resort sites, like you one you just posted. Is there any site where I could get a list of the resorts in each area?

If you do a search on Banff, you should be able to find jobs. They are always crying for workers there.
We eat beef (stead & ribs), Chinese, smorgs - I'm sure pretty much what Australians eat.

thanks so much cj. I really appreciate the help. As you can imagine I'm quite determined to see him completely organised before he goes.
I told him about your suggestions and he said: "cool! I'll check them out after work. tell them thanks for me."
He finishes work at 2.30pm and starts again at 5pm so I probably won't see him again until Saturday morning. In the meantime I'll check out the sites too.
Thanks a million.
